African Americans take own steps

In need of defending their own rights, African Americans took steps to improve conditions in areas the New Deal ignored, such as the Southern Tenant Farmers' Union which protected the rights of tenant farmers and increased job oppurtunites in the North.

Segregation

There were a lot of segregated signs to seperate the blacks from the whites to keep everyone equal.

The black cabinet

the black cabinet had to do with the Negro Affairs. it was a group of black people that gave help to President roosevelt. They helped him with policies that concerned the public.

Roosevelt anti lynching problem

Many southerners didn't want to get rid of lynching so Roosevelt couldn't vote for it because he needed the votes of the southerners to get legislation passed. Several thousand African-Americans were killed by lynching between the 1880's and 1960's.

Scottsboro Case

Nine African American men were convicted by an all white jury for raping a white woman on a train, even though there was no medical evidence that rape had taken place. All were sentenced to death, execpt the youngest one, who was 12 years old.

Mary Bethune

She dedicated herself to promoting opportunities for young African Americans. she was named head of the special department of the national youth administration.

Poll tax

The poll tax allowed any adult male who's father or grandfather had voted in a specific year prior to the abolition of slavery to vote without paying a tax. This means that African-Americans had to pay a tax when they voted that many couldn't afford. Roosevelt couldn't get rid of it because he needed the southern vote.

Discrimination

Many New Deal programs including the FHA, CCC and the TVA discriminated against African Americans. They favored white Americans when providing direct relief and new deal jobs. Also, African Americans often recieved lower wages.
