Project Topic and/or Title: Timeline for Child labor laws in the United States

Abstract (Paragraph summary of research topic): How the United States begun their journey to eliminating child labor. Child labor became popular in the late 18th century during the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Child labor is now considered inhumane in 1842 child labors start to form but have many loopholes and were not really enforced. It wasn’t until 1943 when the Fair Labor Standards Act passed making it hard for children under 16 to work in the mining and manufacturing. Taking almost 100 years to set laws in motion making it illegal for child labor. 

          Child Labor by Robert Kirstad states "in the industry’s early years, youngsters of seven or eight commonly doffed, spun, and did all sorts of casual labor." He also states that "Almost all workers recalled proudly their ability to learn their jobs despite their youth." Back then the most valuable thing you could be was useful. The more knowledge of the work you could do the mor valuable you would hope to become. To be of use by Marge Piercy states "The people I love the best jump into work headfirst without dallying in the shallows." This was the same with child labor, these children worked without knowledge it was inhuman they would work and go to work with great work ethic to survive. When it comes to chain retail store Cary Nelson: On "I Want You Women Up North to Know" states it best "i want you women up north to know, how those dainty children's dresses you buy at Macy's, Wannamaker's, Gimbels, Marshall fields, are dyed in blood, are stitched in wasting flesh." Which emphasizes on how cruel work is and how they work endless hours and prick themselves to make dozens of these outfits.

          The time frame of child labor starts from 1840-1880 putting their children to work also around the time of the Industrial Revolution, but this was not the beginning children have been helping in the field and farmers since the beginning of agricultural and harvesting. It was not until 1842 when they stated children could only work 10 hours a day, that is two years after the start of the industrial revolution and start of child labor. In 1936 The Walsh-healey Act states some standards for working like the amount of time and the age of the person working. And then 1938 The Fair Labor Standards Act is passed setting national minimum wage and number of hours affecting child labor. It also made children under sixteen years of age does not work in manufacturing and mining. Almost 100 years after the start of child labor.
