On Intersectionality and Feminism in Pizza - Akilah Obviously

Teaser:
In this video, Akilah talks about intersectionality and feminism in terms of hamburgers and pizza. She uses common foods as a metaphor to discuss privilege and highlight intersectionality in feminism. She talks about living in a burger (man's) world as a pizza (woman) and as a deluxe pizza (woman of color).
Teaching Idea:
After reading a text, students create their own burgers or pizzas that represent themselves and at least one character in the story they just read. They will then compare and contrast the different pizzas and/or burgers they have drawn (in writing or in discussion), highlighting why those differences are important and lead to different needs and privileges. This gives students a fun and interactive way to learn about intersectionality in feminism and in the texts they are reading

Much of her focus during these years is on her family and school, which are intertwined when her mother decides to return to school and Barakat begins teaching her illiterate grandmother how to read. Throughout her stories of family and school, Barakat interweaves an innocent, young person's perspective of the war and politics at the time, focusing on odd specifics like the difficulty of sending mail rather than the larger political conflicts.
Teaching Idea:
Students explore the idea of a coming of age story by writing their own.
