Those who denied being a witch would be immediately killed. The only way to escape alive out of an accusation was to confess to witchcraft. Those who confessed would be forced to repent, and sometimes jailed. However, if you did confess to witchcraft, other Puritans would often accuse your friends or family of also being witches. In 1948, he wrote a play called The Crucible. It was about the Salem witch trials, but paralleled what he went though during the time. Arthur was accused of being a communist, and refused to give up the "apparent" names he had of other communists. His play, The Crucible, depicts Puritans who were accused of witchcraft, and the events that happened during their trials.
