I love Thanksgiving Day, when we are encouraged to give thanks to God for the blessings that have been bestowed upon us. Several years ago, we hosted an American student who grew up in Hong Kong for her first Thanksgiving in the US. I had printed off copies of "America the Beautiful", "My Country Tis of Thee" and "Yankee Doodle", so that we could all go "Thanksgiving Caroling" around the neighborhood. My American student from China didn't know this was something I had invented, and my kids just indulged me...
The best part was the Hispanic family who spoke little/no English, invited us into their home, thanked us for caroling to them, and asked us to please return again the following year, as no one had caroled to them on Thanksgiving before (we also speak Spanish). It was a great day to be American, celebrating our blessings together as neighbors.

Tibb's Eve, also known as Tip's Eve in other provinces. Tibb's Eve or Tipsy Eve is a celebration held on December 23 originating in Newfoundland.
The wild festivity started sometime around the mid-20th century as the first night during Advent when it was appropriate to have a drink. Advent was a sober, religious time of year and traditionally people would not drink alcohol until Christmas Day at the earliest. Tibb's Eve emerged as an excuse to imbibe two days earlier. The tradition of celebrating Tibb's Eve may be similar to 19th century workers taking Saint Monday off from work.

Halloween has definitely become a bigger deal for us now that we have a child, and there are so many things going on here in Brooklyn. We love seeing all of the houses/apartment buildings that are decorated, the elaborately carved pumpkins, and of course trick-or-treating. There's a neighborhood near where we live where they shut down a street for a few blocks and have a live band playing, with games and other fun things for kids at night.

The Feria is very famous here in Albacete, Spain and is one of the biggest fairs in the whole country! It's a 'cultural' event which has existed in some form since 1375 but for many people it's just an excuse to go out drinking for 10 days in a row! I really enjoy seeing and learning about the traditional costumes, and it's a great chance to get together with friends after the summer holidays.

After that, there’s often a lot of drinking and a game called two-up that involves tossing up two coins and betting on which side they’ll land on. Anzac Day is the only day of the year on which this is legally played in public! The photo is from the more serious side, at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance.

I enjoyed the firework display from the both the riverfront and the high rise bank building for which my mother and grandmother worked as a child. We would usually make a day of the event and bring a picnic. I hope the two cities continue this wonderful event into the future.

Here in Hawaii we observe three local state holidays; Statehood Day, Prince Kūhiō Day, and King Kamehameha Day. The holidays are celebrated at gatherings called lūʻau, with traditional Hawaiian dancing and a feast. We also get the day off from work which is a very nice bonus :)

Statehood Day or Admission Day is a legal holiday in the state of Hawaii in the United States. It is celebrated annually on the third Friday in August to commemorate the anniversary of the state's 1959 admission to the Union. It was first celebrated in 1969.

Prince Kūhiō Day is an official holiday in the state of Hawaiʻi in the United States. It is celebrated annually on March 26, to mark the birth of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole — heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, prince of the House of Kalākaua, and later territorial delegate to the United States Congress. It was established in 1949 by the legislature of the Territory of Hawaii. As a delegate, Kuhio authored the first Hawaii Statehood bill in 1919. He also won passage of the Hawaiian Homes Act, creating the Hawaiian Homes Commission and setting aside 200,000 acres (810 km2) of land for Hawaiian homesteaders.

King Kamehameha I Day on June 11 is a public holiday in the U.S. state of Hawaii.

Bloomsday

The Irish Bloomsday celebration honors James Joyce, one of Ireland's most famous literary masters. This event is held each year on June 16, the day in which Joyce's classic novel "Ulysses" takes place. First celebrated in Ireland in 1954, Bloomsday is now a worldwide event celebrated by Joyceans across the globe. Dublin's James Joyce Centre hosts a number of events in the days leading up to Bloomsday, including reenactments, performances, readings and breakfasts based on cuisine featured in the novel. Some Bloomsday enthusiasts even don Edwardian costumes and make pilgrimages to Dublin locations mentioned in the book.

All sing St Martin's songs until they reach the place where St Martin sees the poor man dressed in rags, cuts his mantle in two pieces and gives one half to the freezing man. Then St Martin gives all the children a Weckmann, a sweet bread man with a clay pipe.

In Holland, people with small children celebrate 'Sinterklaas' (named after Saint Nicholas) on 5th December. Adults dress up as the saint or his helpers and give small presents and candy to children. A few weeks prior to December 5th, children can fill up a shoe with a carrot or something for the saint's horse, sing a song, and discover that the carrot has been replaced with some small present the next morning. At some point, children will be told that the saint doesn't actually exist. It is some sort of milestone in children's life when they don't believe in Sinterklaas anymore. Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about the question whether part of this tradition is politically incorrect or not, and whether it should be changed, and how.

It's traditional to have picnics and to gather with friends. There are often fireworks in the evening. We celebrated over zoom this year. Everyone also celebrates La Fheile Padraig too, even those who are not Irish. There is a huge parade in NYC, which goes up Fifth Ave. All the Irish county organizations march, as well as many bagpipers and other bands.

Here in Catalonia we celebrate Sant Jordi (Saint George). The legend tells us about a town with a dragon living in it. The dragon had the town terrorised and in order for it not to attack, the king had to feed the dragon with a human every day. They chose the person using a draw, and one day the princess was the chosen one. When the dragon was about to eat her, a knight appeared and saved her. The knight was Saint George, and when he killed the dragon, the blood became roses. That’s why every 23th of April we celebrate this day, we give and receive roses and books to and from the loved ones. It is also the book day.
