Fear, ignorance, and a want for political wealth/power had a large impact on this paranoia. Many people were accused of being a witch, even though, possibly they were not actually witches. Some people even pretended to be witches. According to them, they acted so well, they became intoxicated and believed/became witches. We think all the hysteria was not worth it because in the end, none of the witches were actually proven to be real. More than one hundred accused witches were set free. One reason as to why so many witches were set free is the fact that one of the accused was the governor's own wife.
