This type of program is effective in supporting struggling learners through the drafting, editing and revising and rewriting stops of the writing process.  Google Read & Write can be especially helpful for the large group of kids that find handwriting so difficult that they cannot effectively get their ideas on paper. Some of these students demonstrate illegible handwriting, produce very short written assignment responses or rush through or completely avoid written work altogether. This program can help students who have difficulty producing written work start the writing process and documenting their ideas (Kulman, 2018).  During revision, Google Read & Write can offer editing software and online dictionaries to correct spelling or to improve vocabulary (Paquet-Belanger, 2017, p.1).

        Research has demonstrated the benefits of word prediction for struggling students.  Word prediction programs have been show to improve spelling accuracy, writing fluency, syntax and overall organization.  Additional research has shown that speech-to-text programs can benefit older students.  These students have shown improved writing quality when using these programs as opposed to handwriting.  Text-to-speech programs have also been shown to be beneficial for proofreading and revising.  Using these programs, students can hear mistakes and then edit their writing independently (Evmenova & Regan, 2019, p.1).
