The successful captive breeding program of the highly endangered California condor by the San Diego Zoo produced enough animals that many were released back into the wild. Some zoos have also evolved from simple purveyors of facts about individual animals into educators, describing the ecosystems, environmental concerns, and policy issues surrounding the animal, thus attempting to provide a more complete learning experience to the public.

And indeed, exploitation or experimental removal of abundant species have been shown to increase the diversity of local communities, especially if leftover resources become available to rare species. However, in a hyper-connected world, there is a real possibility that the resources freed by such a harvest would allow another opportunistic species to enter the community and reinforce, or even worsen, the dominance pattern

Many conditions of captivity (antibiotic exposure, altered diet composition, homogenous environment, increased stress, and altered intraspecific interactions) likely lead to changes in the host-associated microbiome. To minimize the problems arising from captivity, efforts can be taken to manipulate microbial diversity and composition to be comparable with wild populations through methods such as increasing dietary diversity, exposure to natural environmental reservoirs, or probiotics.

Some parts of the proposed conservation area are already protected as national and state parks and tribal lands, but the added territory could enable wildlife to roam beyond southwest Florida.
