Some of these include: The Trojan War, which started in 1194 BCE, The Lelantine War, which started in 710 BCE, the First Messenian War, which started in 743 BCE, the Meliac War, which started in 690 BCE, the First Sacred War, which started in 595 BCE, and many more violent wars. There were 44-45 known wars involving the Greeks. There may be hundreds that no one knows about, not even the archaeologists. </div>]]></description>

         <title>3. The Hoplite&#39;s Equipment - Timothy Sullivan</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Hoplites used weapons like a long ash wood spear and a short sword. The spear was usually 8 feet tall and the sword was 60 cm in length. Many of them carried a dagger. They would were a leather lined bronze helmet. The helmet was designed to protect the head, neck, and face. The corselet is made out of bronze or leather and they carried a long circular shield.          <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Their biggest warships had three banks of oars known as ‘triremes’</li><li>To row one trireme they needed 170 people and there was one man at each oar</li><li>The front of a trireme had a sharp metal ram</li><li>The triremes tried to get closer to other ships and so they could crash into them</li><li>The trireme would put a big hole in the ship so water could flood in it and it would sink</li><li>Sometimes when the ships got hit they would have to dock at the nearest shore.</li></ul>]]></description>
