The spear was usually 8 feet tall and the sword was 60 cm in length. Many of them carried a dagger. They would were a leather lined bronze helmet. The helmet was designed to protect the head, neck, and face. The corselet is made out of bronze or leather and they carried a long circular shield. They would sometimes where armguards to protect their shins.

  • Their biggest warships had three banks of oars known as ‘triremes’
  • To row one trireme they needed 170 people and there was one man at each oar
  • The front of a trireme had a sharp metal ram
  • The triremes tried to get closer to other ships and so they could crash into them
  • The trireme would put a big hole in the ship so water could flood in it and it would sink
  • Sometimes when the ships got hit they would have to dock at the nearest shore.

    • Considered the greatest sea battle in Greek history
    • Not far from Athens 
    • Fought in 480 BC between the Greeks and Persians
    • There was a fleet of 500 Persian ships
    • 200 Persian ships were sank and it was a huge victory for the Greeks
