Leo believes that if he eats sugar, it will help him remember more. So, in between each trial, he eats an entire bag of gummy worms and June doesn’t. They give each other 2 days to practice and both kids will perform the piece on the piano. It is a time for him to write a updated emergency handbook for the submarine. He is working on the submarine ballast section and what to do in an emergency when the sub must ascend quickly. He decides to test by releasing pressure in one tank at a time, two tanks at a time, and then all four tanks together. Captain Barnacles presumes that if he releases pressure in all for ballast tanks at the same time, then the submarine will ascend quicker. He decides that he will run the experiment 3 times and average the times out to figure out which one is fastest. At a depth of 100 meters, Captain Barnacles releases the pressure in 1 ballast tank at a time. One the first trial, it takes 10.2 seconds to break the surface of the ocean. On the second try and at the same depth, Captain Barnacles breaks the surface in 11.3 seconds, and on the third try, the sub rises at 11.46 seconds. Now he is going to try releasing 2 tanks at a time. On the first try, he breaks the surface at 9.8 seconds, second try gets him 8.63 seconds, and the third try ascends at 9.2 seconds. Finally, he goes down to try releasing all four tanks at a time. On the first try, don at 100 meters, he rises in 5.27 seconds. On the second try, Captain breaks the surface at 4.9 seconds. Lastly, he tries again and comes up in 4.68 seconds. He then goes back to HQ and averages out all the times. When the 1 ballast tank at a time tests are averaged, the time is 10.9 seconds, two ballast tanks at a time is 9.21 seconds, and all four ballast tanks at a time averaged out to 4.95 seconds. In Conclusion, Captain Barnacles proved himself right when he said that if all four ballast tanks were released at the same time, then the submarine would ascend quickest. He knows this information because when all three test times were averaged out, releasing all four ballast tanks at the same time came out to 4.95 seconds, being the fastest time out of all three.
