• Antithesis (opposite) of utopia 

• The dystopian genre is a type of fiction that explores imagined, nightmarish societies where life is often unfair, controlled, or dangerous. 

• Set in the future or alternate world, showing what could happen if current problems worsen

• Dystopia as a genre is quite often used to describe a place that appears perfect on the surface but is bad underneath

• Sometimes the people see what has happened but it's suppressed - usually the protagonist realises the wrong and starts the rebellion.

• Give up  something in exchange for something else (freedom for safety)

• Society itself is often the antagonist in dystopian fiction - it is often the society that is working against the protagonist

• Technological control - surveillance, ai used to monitor and manipulate others

Dystopia - Futuristic, imagined universe

Perfect society is maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, totalitarian control.

Dystopian literature criticises current trends, norms, or political systems.

Post apocalyptic - after an apocalypse, worldwide event involving destruction or damage on a catastrophic scale - that nearly ended the world or human race.

• It is hard to differentiate between dystopian and post apocalyptic because the apocalypse has not been recognised 

• The apocalyptic world is set far into the future

Types of dystopian control:

• Corporate control -  one of the more of the large corporations control society through products, advertising and the media.

• Bureaucratic control -  society is controlled by a mindless bureaucracy through a tangle of red tape, relentless regulations and incompetent government officials

• Technological control - society is controlled by technology - through computers, robots and/or scientific means

• Philosophic/ Religious control - society is controlled by a philosophical or religious ideology often enforced through a dictatorship or theocratic government. 

A utopia is a community or society possessing highly desirable or near perfect qualities

It is the creation of an ideal society, place or state that is ideally perfect in respect of politics, laws, customs or conditions.

• There are many challenges to creating a utopian society in our world today, people have different opinions and views on a perfect society, human flaws.

Features of utopia - 

• Peace and harmony - no conflict or violence, citizens live in safety and cooperation

• Equality and justice - fair laws and systems

• Freedom and individual rights, people are valued and respected

• Environmental balance, sustainability, the environment is protected and valued

• No poverty or suffering

• Ideal societal conditions
