I choose the book The Autobiography of Jack The Ripper by James Carnac because i found H.H. Holmes part in Devil in The White City interesting to read. I am interested in forensic science as a career. I originally walked into Tacnick book store looking for a book on Forensics but, this book caught my eye. Jack the Ripper was never arrested even though one man confessed. He had eerie details on the murders. In the introduction of the book one man who found the confession story written by Jack the Ripper (James Carnac) asked the audience to decide if they believe Carnac is guilty or innocent. I was intrigued by this part. After reading the first 30 pages of the book I am really looking forward to what the rest of the book has to offer.

"But I assure you, my dear old friend So-and-so (I feel it would be unfair to specify your name and so fling your body to the reporters)" (14)
James Carnac is the writer of the Autobiography of Jack The Ripper. Carnac writes with a very harsh tone. If he wanted the story to sound light and playful he would have used words such as "approach the reporters" instead of "Fling your body to the reporters". His tone fits in perfectly with the book because its about one of the most mysterious murders of all time, which is as far as you can get from cheerful.

"It was, perhaps, as well that my mind at the time was fully occupied by the interests of my new school and with my hobby of drawing" (46).
The first section of the book is dedicated to only his childhood. We learn that he had a relatively normal childhood. He lived in a small house and had two parents. However, his dad was a drunk which may have some influence in his later hobby of murder. Reading of his childhood scares me. He seems like every other teenager, focusing on schools and recreational hobby's. Carnac even talks about a crush he has. All this talk almost makes me forget that he grows up to be one of the most hated people in the the world. I look around at all the people around me and I am anxious to continue reading and see if their was a specific tragic event that caused Carnac to spin out of control.

"They (knives) fascinated me and occasional incidents would arise when I would become intensely aware of the fascination" (106).
James Carnac's parents died when he was 17 due to slit throats by knives or more specifically surgical knives. Instead of being afraid of knives after this, as most people would be, he found interest in knives. The scary part about his interest was that he did not want to use the knives to cut food but human flesh. I want to know if his parents didn't die would he still be into knives or was it the traumatic experience of seeing his parents throats cut open what triggered his fascination. Wanting to cut flesh and actually killing humans is two completely different actions. I'm interested in knowing if there is any other tragedies he witnesses that led him to kill the people or if he was just so mentally ill that his brain was programed to kill humans.
