Lesson Steps:

Introduction (15 minutes)

· Begin by discussing the concept of diversity. Explain that everyone is unique and has different qualities.

· Introduce the book “Just Ask” and its themes of acceptance and curiosity.

Read-Aloud: “Just Ask” (20 minutes)

· Read the book aloud to the class.

· Pause to discuss the characters and their diverse qualities.

· Emphasize that everyone has unique abilities and challenges.

Activity 1: “Our Unique Qualities” (20 minutes)

· Each student shares two to three items that are important to them (e.g., a favorite toy, hobby, a family tradition).

· Create a colorful display on chart paper with sticky notes representing these unique qualities they have written/braille down.

· Discuss how our differences make our classroom vibrant.

Activity 2: “Commonalities” Game (15 minutes)

· Pair students randomly.

· Each pair identifies three things they have in common (e.g., favorite color, hobbies).

· Share commonalities with the whole class.

· Highlight that even though we’re unique, we can find similarities too.

Discussion: Celebrating Differences (15 minutes)

· Discuss the diverse qualities mentioned in the book.

· Focus on the characters with special educational needs (e.g., Rafael using an inhaler and ask the class who uses an inhaler in our classroom, who uses a walking cane etc.).

· Talk about how everyone contributes to the community garden.

Writing Activity: “My Unique Qualities” (20 minutes)

· Students write about their own unique qualities. The visually impaired children will use their braille.

· Encourage descriptive language and self-expression.

· For students with special needs, provide additional support as needed.

Art Project: “Our Inclusive Classroom” (20 minutes)

· Provide art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper, modeling clay).

· Ask students to draw/ model themselves and their classmates, celebrating their diverse qualities.

· Include characters with various abilities (e.g., using a wheelchair, using braille, wearing looking glasses).
