Body Image in Los Angles

Body
image within dance plays a huge part within the industry effecting the way
performers look, eat and think. After reading this essay about body image
particularly in Los Angeles it has really opened my eyes to the influence and
pressure of looking a certain way to be in the profession/industry. It’s clear
as this essay states that the media is a huge influence on how dancers should
look this of course then effects they way dancers eat and think. when its
constantly promoted that 'the perfect body type' to be a specific dancer
(especially a ballet or jazz dancer) is to be stick thin it has a negative
effect on how dancers feel about themselves when dancers look in the mirror and
don't see what their seeing on the Tv and in shows ect its bound to make the
dancer question the way their look which subconsciously makes them
uncomfortable in their own skin and looking at themselves.

Its very clear that 9 times out of 10 you get a job based on the
way you look which seems ridiculous as surely if its a dance job you should get
the job if your dance ability is to the highest standard not depending on
weather you'll fit in the costume of the underweight girl they had before or
how you'd look with the camera on you which apparently adds 10 pounds.

If a dancer is going to appear on TV particularly a girl you
have the pressure of wanting males you think you beautiful and have a nice body
and attractive on the eye but also for girls to want to be you and to want to
look the way you do. This pressure drives girls insane.

I feel it’s particularly in Los Angeles as there so many dancers
which means there’s so much competition. This means that everyone’s talented
meaning they have to look at other things to make decision of hierarchy so to
speak of the dancer. So It usually switches to image. Body image if obviously included
in this. So people take it to the extreme of competing to be the thinnest in
order to have one over or more of a chance then anybody else. This is where I find
the whole scenario hypercritical as you say you don’t want to promote eating
disorders yet the people getting the jobs are stick thin which means everyone looks
up to them.

Dancer and being thin

After reading the PDF
about ‘Dancers need to stop fetishizing thin’. It brought my attention to the
fact that every dancers thinks about their weight weather it’s intentional or
sub consciously. The industry is a vain industry. Dancers stand in a mirror for hours and hours
every single day when training so of course this allows a lot of time for a
dancer to judge themselves and find things they like and dislike about
themselves. Its almost dancers are brain washed as all they ever hear in
training is you need to be toned, thin , tuck in your stomach ect.

 Personally, I see
both sides of the argument and obviously to be taken seriously as a dancer you
have to look the part. For example if you saw a gold medallist athlete I highly doubt
they would look out of shape as with the amount your training, your body should
naturally fall into place. Same way if Usain Bolt was overweight we’d all be a little confused. As it’s a discipline and
sacrafise you make to do a physical activity to a high standard because you have
to become your art form in the same way if a doctor walked in with tattoos and
peircings all over there body and face would you let them operate on you ?

Judging people based on there looks is a natural thing. Not to
say first impressions cant change. I suppose being in shape just heightens your
chances of being hired. This is due to the fact it gets to a point in training
when you get to a certain level , start auditioning and realise everybodys
talented therefore it then no longer becomes about talent but about looks and
if you fit with other dancer ect and all these other aspect and factors come
into the decision making. I think you learn as a dancer not to give people an
excuse to not give you the job and unfortunately body type is important.

 However, there’s
being in shape and there’s being painfully thin.

"Don't judge a book by its cover". An English idiom popularized by Bo Diddley. Meaning "you shouldn’t prejudge the worth or value of something by its outward appearance alone". (Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover | JD Journal, 2014) This is a well-known saying but does it apply in dance? Is the dancers image equally or even more important than technique and performance? Graham Mcfee quotes “what I see hence what I can judge, in respect of aesthetic, depends on my sense impressions, my perceptions, what I see “. (MacFee, 1992) "so the judgement I make cannot be made by any other person. Hence I cannot be wrong about them (anything goes?) (MacFee, 1992). In my opinion, this is a valid statement written by Graham Mcfee. I believe, making judgement is natural however, the recognition of weather your judgement is objective or subjective is important. "All art-critical judgments raise the question of objectivity/subjectivity”. (Objectivity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2016) "Objective judgments and claims are assumed to be free from personal considerations, emotional perspectives, etc. Subjective judgments and claims, However, are assumed to be heavily (if not entirely) influenced by such personal". (Cline, 2016) In my opinion, we are all programmed differently therefor what we see and the judgments we make are personal to us. However, in the dance industry whose Judgement and Opinion is most significant? This is such a vast area open to debate therefor within my presentation I will present this argument by synthesizing my research findings. Furthermore, I will defend my own perspectives in relation to my area of inquiry. I will justify my approach by my research strategy.

In My opinion, Image and technique are equally important in creating a successful dancer. The key to finding what's considered a “perfect whole package” is understanding the balance of the two. a dancer that has concurred the balance bringing them closer to having "the whole package". (What does whole package mean? 2016) this saying means "something or someone that possesses a full set of relevant characteristics usually desirable ones". (What does whole package mean? 2016)

This is relevant as I believe, dancers do 'desire' to appear perfect by possessing the relevant characteristics of exceptional technique alongside an ideal body type which could be described as a pleasure to watch.

I quote Clive… “the objects that provoke aesthetic emotion vary with each individual”.
Considering ‘pleasure’ means “a source of enjoyment or delight” (pleasure, 2016) I believe to find a conclusion of ‘what makes someone a pleasure to watch” is difficult to synthesise because the aesthetic emotion within us all will vary giving us a varied subjective judgement. For example, Simon Shaw (head co-head of impressionist and modern art) described van Gough’s famous picture of sunflowers as” beautiful and vibrant” (Impact, 2016). I regard that that this piece considered “beautiful and vibrant” because it’s outwardly beautiful making it easy on the eye. In comparison, with Picasso and his Piece “Guernica”. “I quote It is actually easy to agree that Guernica is great art, and agree that it is not beautiful without rejecting beauty as the defining characteristic of art.” (Aesthetics -, 2016) In comparison with Van Goughs successful famous piece which is considered outwardly beautiful “Guernica” in my subjective opinion, is equally successful and famous yet appears to me as hard to view. Although, Guernica is not considered outwardly beautiful is there beauty within it?
Through researching it is becoming clear to me that I may not be able to come to come to an objective conclusion about whether there is beauty within Picasso’s artwork. However, I can use my subjective judgment to come up with an argument open for debate. My argument is there is beauty within the piece because it’s different. Subjectively I think, individuality is beautiful in its own right. Because it takes courage to step outside of the box.

I quote “Many people who consider themselves artists use certain methods to achieve what they see, and a lot of society sees as art. Many artists try to captivate their audiences by using methods that people might want to see.” (Is art itself subjective? | Philosophy of Art Course Blog, 2012) This leads me to question whether artists are seeking subjective approval from the audience that may view the work. Arguably similar to artists creating movement in dance searching for approval in society. In my opinion, many artists are striving for success. In order to achieve success, it could be suggested that that artists are choosing to conform to people’s perception of what is considered successful again striving for “the whole package” Including desirable characteristics.

Following this where did these Desirable characteristics come from?

Where does this desire to be ‘perfect’ come from?

Following my research of subjective and objective judgments. I discovered it appears art is similar to dance in the sense both art forms open up room for subjective judgment however, are the art forms themselves subjective or objective? I quote Clive (Is art itself subjective? | Philosophy of Art Course Blog, 2012)

“Artists go to school to learn methods and keep these techniques in mind when they are creating their art. So when someone is making art it is not only based on emotional subjectivity, but has some objective character to it because the artist keeps the techniques he was taught in mind.” (Is art itself subjective? | Philosophy of Art Course Blog, 2012)

I believe the observer’s reaction to a work of art is subjective,

However art itself has objective charter within it.

Arguably dance could be described as the same. As dancers go to class, school or even watch videos etc. that teach specific techniques and methods which dancers then include in their influence of movement. Therefor it could be argued that dancer’s choreography or movement is not only based on emotional subjectivity but has some objective character to it because the artist keeps the techniques they were taught in mind.

Bearing in mind Picasso didn’t conform to what was considered beautiful to paint. Yet he still managed to be successful. In fact, i belive the very reason he was so sucessful was because of his bravery to be individual to do something different. Objectivly, in order for things to evolve and change someone has to instigait the change. In this case i belive Picasso had a part to play in the change of what we respected and considered to be art. Simularly to dance changed has to be instigated from someone or somewhere. Someone has to take that step. So where did change come form in dance?

WHO CHANGES OR HELPS DANCERS IMAGE TO EVOLVE?
I Quote "Today, a muse is a person who serves as an artist's inspiration." (muse - Dictionary Definition, 2016) subjectivly i think that there are many factors what helps dance to evolve. Do we allow our personal subjective judgements to be influenced by whats considered outwardly beautiful on the basis of well respected artists subjective judments comparing ourselves to their personal muse (what they base their vision on) do we aspire to share various "desirable" characteristics that their personal muse's have?
George Balanchine was also a practitioner who had an ideal type for his dancers after being inspired by Suzanne Farell and making her his muse. "Balanchine was the co-founder, artistic director and chief choreographer of the New York City Ballet." (Anon, 2016)

As Suzanne Farrell became Balanchine’s muse, suddenly longer legs, shorter torsos, long necks and small heads became the aesthetic all the way through to the youngest 8-year-olds auditioning for the School of American Ballet. (Magazine, 2011) Before this longer skirts were wore which the ballerinas legs were not as exposed therefore it didnt seem as significant. It may appear that due Suzanne Farrel's dance ability influenced the 'ideal' stereotypical balletic look. Due to the fact after Suzanne appeared on the ballet scene within Ballenchines presence, what Ballenchine was then looking for in female dancers was a look similar to Suzannes image.Using my subjective judgement this shows that yes there is a stereotypical image but this is based on Balanchines subjective judgement of what female ballet dancers looked like arguably making it seem that image is more important then dance technique and skills ect. However, Suzanne Farells story shows that if you are considered that much of a remarkable dancer there is no reason why you can’t change people’s perception and subjective veiw of what is the ideal look for a female ballet dancer. In my opinion, this allows us to believe that dance ability is equally if not more important in becoming a successful within the ballet industry. (Magazine, 2011)

Muse's don’t just appear in the dance industry for example in the fashion industry it could be argued that as the season changes so does the 'in' fashion or trend. It could also be argued that the media then popularizes what is 'in' fashion at a specific time influencing people to purchase clothes to 'fit in' aspiring to look like and share characteristics as well respected models in the limelight such as "Twiggy" who was a famous model of the 60s. I quote "no 1960s fashion round up would be complete without Twiggy. One of the greatest beauty muses ever, Almost overnight she became the face of the decade".(Caroline Leaper 2015) This allows me to believe that if your brave enough to try something new similar to how twiggy broke out of the model stereotype of being I quote "voluptuous models like in the 1950" (Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton - by Bill Harry, 2016) Following in Jean Sharpton’s footsteps after she helped I quote "break the mould entirely with her super slender frame, paving the way for fellow free-spirited waifs such as Twiggy and eventually Kate Moss"(Caroline Leaper 2015).However, does this mean when a muse breaks the mould and blows up in the public eye do to their individuality ,do others then aspire and desire to share the same characteristics as the current muse of that time in order to be considered as popular. Subjectively I think that if that is so then surely this transitions and causes that particular muse of that time to lose some of their individuality because everyone starts to aspire to be similar to them and look like them? I think it’s important to state that Twiggy is still modelling today. However, now she models for Marks and Spenser’s and in my opinion appears more voluptuous this then leads me to wonder whether she has conformed to what subjectively seems a more popular body type to view in today’s society. But where has this popular body type come from? Does the media influence the evolution of what’s considered a popular image and will this continue to change?

Does Social Media and Media influence society?

Here are some examples of the differences between Traditional Media and Social Media. I quote "Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, microblogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis are among the different types of social media. It could be argued that in comparison with Traditional Media, Social Media is not regulated therefor sites within social media could be held more responsible for allowing exposure of what might be considered as influential weather that be over sexualised behaviour or violence and other negative aspect etc. that could be viewed online. Using what I now know to be my subjective judgement I believe in the relevance of dance, Oversexualised dancing such as the term 'twerking' is being exposed as a sexual dance which is being allowed to view by younger people and even children. It could have argued that there is nothing wrong with that as 'twerking' actually originated in Africa as a social dance with friends and family certainly not being used as a rude inappropriate movement. However, subjectively I think due to social media it has somehow been twisted and represented by the likes of Miley Cirrus, taking it out of context for appropriation because it sells. I feel my main concern of social media influences linking to media influences also is that is what is being put out there thought carefully about the effect it will have on society and the upcoming generation or does not that not matter as it appears to selling and making money? Is the message the media putting out thought and cared about or is its main priority just to sell and make money? I believe the answer to all these questions would have a subjective outcome therefor I can only state my opinion to express my personal subjective judgement.

I have clear sections exploring stereotypes in all genres of dance. However, I will include them within my essay. For the purpose of today I will vocalise my subjective opinion to explore weather Commercial dance has a stereotype. It could be argued that the world of commercial dance that was considered to be inclusive and non prescriptive seems to be swaying towards the side of stereotyping and prejudice. Subjectively I have come up with this argument due to the fact controversy to commercial for years’ ballet has been taught in exam format based on objective silicosis’s within various dance schools. However, I as a student attending the first ever Commercial dance course offering a professional BA Hons degree could argue that only recently commercial is growing becoming a genre taught in its own right. As before it seemed commercial dance was considered to be inclusive and non prescriptive. However, now it is being taught as a genre within universities, conserver wars offering a professional degree in my case, has it become stereotypical and prejudice? In the audition process what do me teaches look for? Is image equally or more important to them when accepting students in to the school? Through researching I have realised I am unable to give objective answers to these questions as the answer lies within each individual’s subjective judgement, using their personal aesthetic emotion which like I earlier stated varies within each individual. This reinforces my point of “so the judgements I make cannot be made by any other person. Hence I cannot be wrong about them (anything goes?)”. (MacAfee, 1992). However, I can further my argument by drawing from my personal subjective judgement.

Influential artists such as Paris Goebel began by being individual and not fitting in to a preconceived idea. She developed her own unique style I quote “Combining sassy woman fire with aggressive inner strength” (Goebel, 2016) Paris was I quote “born in Auckland in New Zealand” appears to have a strong cultural background. It could be suggested that Paris uses her cultural background to her advantage. Having personally being to Hip Hop International in LA where I witnessed Paris Globule preparing for competition by using the use of the Hakka. I quote “the hacka is a type of ancient Maori war dance traditionally used on the battlefield. Hakka are fierce display of a tribe’s pride strength and unity.” (Goebel, 2016) It could be suggested that Paris uses these elements of strength not only when perfuming the Hakka as warm up but also within her choreography. She appears to incorporate actions such as and I quote “violent foot-stamping, tongue protrusions and rhythmic body slapping”. Arguably Paris Grubel is similar to Picassos piece ‘Guernica’ in the sense of her movement may not be considered outwardly beautiful however the beauty may be seen within her bravery to do something different. But how did Paris become well known? It could be argued that Paris used social media platforms to promote her style and presentation. She became a forerunner in the world of commercial dance and what many aspired to. The irony of her story in particular is that now she has set a precedent to which so many young dancers and artists aspire to. So whereas she set out to break the boundaries of preconception and stereotype – she has now, in fact, become just that. As stated – the use of social media can be a very powerful tool. Paris Goebel developed a presence through this platform which caused her to become a household name in the world of commercial dance. The problem as far as I am concerned is the fact that these platforms of social media are too loose and unregulated. Exposing young people to images and ideals which are unrealistic and potentially damaging. Mainstream media is regulated and more safeguarded, and potentially less damaging to impressionable young people. It’s important to understand this is my personal subjective judgement and yours may vary to mine based on the evidence I am showing.
In my opinion the world of commercial dance is commerce driven – focusing exclusively on the bottom line. Profit margins and what does or doesn’t sell are the priority, and at times can be damaging if not thoroughly regulated. After creating my presentation, I have furthered my research within my essay investigating what could be described as Media moguls such as Rupert Murdoch etc. Digging to find weather it’s fair to describe him as having thin moral code, questioning whether he is focusing on profit and commerce rather than adhering to a moral obligation to the young people who are exposed to his media exploits.

In conclusion, it appears from my research, that with the intention of discovering clear answers to weather Image or Technique is more important within the dance, I have in fact discovered there is no Objective answer. What each person see’s ‘hence what they can judge depends on their personal sense impression, their perceptions of what they see.” (MacFee, 1992) I hope you can use my research to come up with your own subjective opinion of weather Image or Technique is more important within the dance industry. It seems your judgements can not be wrong as their personal to you I quote “anything goes” (MacFee, 1992) However, I hope you investigate deeply when using this theory to ensure you “don’t Judge a book by its cover” exploring all subjective opinions in order to make sure your judgment is not biased according to someone else’s subjective judgement.
