Practice Week 1 & 2 - Gaining Confidence and familiarity of Hurdling

1) - On our first week of practice we used ladders and small hurdles to help students to get used of the jumping motion of hurdling. Keeping the head up, eyes facing forward, arm drive and working opposite leg and arm together were the main cues we looked at. It was also done for students to find out what their leading leg was.
2) - Students were also given the chance to practice using the correct size hurdles while walking through it to get used of the height and distance between the hurdles.
3) - The main goal for this week was for students to build up their confidence in terms of getting over a hurdle and to practice the motion of hurdling while keeping head facing forward.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQVqS8A3JRA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp6qdPFoGxI

Practice Week 3 & 4 - Trailing Leg

1) - Now that the performer was familiar with the motion of clearing a hurdle while walking etc as a coach i wanted to progress him onwards in these weeks to more skill refinement. The coach allowed the performer to practice walking through the hurdles at the beginning of the classes putting specific emphasis on the trailing leg.
2) - The coach then had the performer practice the skill using one hurdle to help getting used of opening the hip joint and clearing the hurdle using the correct technique. This isolation of the skill made it easier for the student to practice using their trailing leg without the element of speed and timing. The main critical cue we looked at was ..
- Tucking the trail leg making sure its horizontal and flat and at about 45 degrees to the body.
3) - Overall i was happy with these lessons as the performer was very engaging throughout and knew that if he was to be a proficient hurdler he would have to improve his trailing leg technique. By the end of the lessons his technique had improved due to the skill refinement tasks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZavbyjgCLAg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUU7WFymw1E

Practice Week 5 & 6 - Pace and Stride Length/ Facing Forward

1) - In these two week my goal as coach was to add pace and speed into the exercises as to improve the time the performer was taking to clear the hurdles. We looked at stride length and frequency when approaching the hurdles. The cues we looked at were saying 1,2,3 jump.. between each hurdle so it allowed the performer to sort his footing out so it would be his stronger leg leading at each hurdle.
2) - The performer also engaged in a obstacle course type format of all the exercises we have been practicing since week 1 in order to put the skills he learned into use. This included ladders, small hurdles, big hurdles and sprinting. The performer received feedback from the coach throughout on how to improve technique such as raising your head, arms driving at 90 degrees, trailing leg and ground contact time.
3) - I felt that these lessons went very well as the performer was performing the hurdle technique to a high standard. He demonstrated an enjoyment of the obstacle concept as it added fun to the lesson. One of the main difficulties was trying to provide feedback to performer when completing the obstacle course as he was trying to do it in the fastest time possible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-Ea-CAEGhc

Week 7 & 8 - Skill Perfecting and Authentic Learning Experience of Hurdling

1) - These two weeks were all about consolidating and perfecting the skill. It was made up of skill orientated drills of hurdling allowing the student to get as much practice as possible of a realistic hurdling setting. The performer was encouraged to count the steps in his head to improve an accurate stride count.
2) - We also implemented turning a corner in these weeks lessons to provide an authentic experience of a hurdling race. The performer had to get his footing right to ensure he would be on their right stride to take the hurdle jump.
3) - Overall, i was happy with how the 8 weeks went and the performer seemed to enjoy it throughout. One of the main challenges i found when coaching the hurdles was getting the performer to build the confidence to jump the hurdles. The performer also found it difficult at the start to grasp the trailing leg technique as it was not a motion they were used of.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEutB0G0GBU
