The biggest change for assessment will be how teachers use formative assessment to personalize the learning for the students. Teachers will have to build in more quick formative assessments so that they can look at the data and adjust their instruction based on the data.

Currently, I do quite a bit of formative assessment by walking around and observing or discussing directly with students and lab groups so this will have to change. I will have to create and build in more assessments so that students can self-evaluate and restructure their own learning or a regular basis. We have very few summative assessments and they carry quite a bit of weight in the class so formative feedback will be critical. It will need to be timely and specific. Not sure how this will work at this point.

Effective learning environments include teachers who continually observe student progress and provide constructive feedback to students throughout the semester. If teachers do this, student performance on a summative assessment should be predicted fairly easily. There shouldn't be surprises at the end of a unit, or a semester. Formative assessments are powerful tools that are often used for students to gauge their own progress, with teachers providing support and coaching to help students drive their own learning, and their personal desire to do so.

There needs to be more formative assessment in the process so both teachers and students will have knowledge when support or change of course is needed. Students must be able to take assessment information and reflect on it in order to improve.

In a blended environment assessment will become more blended as well. Students will experience a variety of assessments that may include formal tests, but will also involve many formative checks and alternative summative assessments.

Formative assessment will be key in determining classroom activities and grouping. Tailoring in class instruction based on formative data will personalize the learning for each student and maximize student learning. For me, this presents a challenge. I will have to figure out how to structure formative assessments that will help students assess their understanding of material and provide a spring board to for in class activities.

When I first started teaching, we gave review packets that looked exactly like the test. The concept of Blended is about more personalized learning. It's not about regurgitating information. In preparing students for assessment, I have to be sure to give students a variety of questions to help them feel confident in the assessment. I also believe that if learning is personalized, we should personalize tests in a way. I see this by giving choice on tests. If students have an option to demonstrate their learning in two different ways, it honors them as a learner.

I provided my assessment answer too early! On the curriculum padlet I noted that our curriculum development process will have to extend into the collaborative development of common formative assessments so that students and teachers have immediate data they need to make decisions about next steps in the learning process.

The first thing that comes to mind is the potential to use data and analytics from the technology to immediate feedback and deeper learning experiences or teaching. Like others, I believe that pre-assessment and continuous formative assessment are important to all instructional designs but especially in the blended design.

I also think that expectations for the timing of feedback and assessment could be interesting and something to discuss with students. We want to provide students with continuous and timely feedback but we also need to have balance. What will assessment of progress look like in College? What will it look like in the workplace? How do you determine if you are performing well?

Assessment data is important in a blended environment as personalized paths for students cannot be developed without a clear understanding of what a student knows and can do. Shifts with the role of the teacher can mean that assessment will look different. There will be more reliance on formative assessment. There will be more variation is the types of assessments that students complete. There will be more focus on mastery of skills with multiple data points and retakes.
