I'm reading #SchoolTalk. In the first chapter the author suggests that educators ask two daily questions:
1) Is every student receiving what he/she needs to succeed?
2) Have I(as an educator) secured all needed supports, opportunities, and resources for those who typically haven't received what they have needed from other schools?
When I reflect on these questions it is easy to say 'yes, we should all do this" but how can educators identify these needs if their lenses of perception do not include certain races, backgrounds, special needs, language/cultural barriers, etc. Each of us have a specific lens in our specialty areas and this makes me think of how valuable it is to have a diverse group of people working together on a daily basis to address these needs.

How to be an Antiracist by Kendi

The book’s central message is that the opposite of “racist” isn’t “not racist.” The true opposite
of “racist” is antiracist. “The good news,” Kendi writes, “is that racist and antiracist are not fixed
identities. We can be racist one minute and an antiracist the next.” This is both encouraging (I have the capacity to do better) and discouraging (I can't just make one big decision and then, POOF! I'm not racist). It just means I need to make ongoing choices about my actions. I also like how Kendi weaves his discussion about racism/antiracism with his family history and his own story.
