A Unique Novel

This unit begins with a Word Study Workshop that focuses on words that look alike or sound alike but have different meanings. Then you will move to a Reading Workshop that will introduce you to a novel in which each chapter is a poem. You will explore the characters, settings, and conflicts of the book, as well as its language, imagery, sensory details, and form. Finally, in the Writing Workshop that concludes this unit, you will revise, proofread, and publish the piece you wrote expressing your own opinion on an issue. As you make your final adjustments to your piece, you can and should consider how to spice up its language with words and phrases that capture the imaginations of your readers.

OLS Lesson 10.3 Inside Out & Back Again

A Year to Remember

What can happen in a year? How much can change? Kim Hà, the narrator and main character of Inside Out and Back Again, will learn the answers to these questions over the course of the novel. And so will you, as you follow Hà on her incredible journey from Vietnam to the United States. In the first lesson about Thanhha Lai’s novel, focus on the unique way that Lai tells Hà’s story and her use of poetic devices.

Guided Reading Questions to consider while reading:

1. What does Ha do without her mother's knowledge on the first day of he new year?

2. What happens to Ha's best friend TiTi in this part of the novel?

3. How does Ha feel when she buys less pork, spinach, and tofu for her mother so that she can spend some money on treats for herself?

The war is coming closer to Hà and her family. Continue to read Inside Out and Back Again, focusing on the events that lead the characters to flee Vietnam. Then examine how history shapes this novel and the ways in which Thanhha Lai uses poetry to depict the emotions characters feel and the challenges they face.

At Sea

This section of Inside Out and Back Again is called “At Sea.” It is a fitting title, since the term “at sea” is sometimes used to describe someone or something that is lost, which is how Hà and her family feel after leaving Vietnam. Continue to read Inside Out and Back Again. Focus on how the events in the family’s life are connected and influence each other. Then explore Thanhha Lai’s use of dialogue and what it reveals about events and characters.
