Nosedive a Postmodern Work

The Netflix television series Black Mirror itself serves as a postmodern exploration of the relationship between humans and technology. The episode Nosedive specifically focuses on the impact of social media in a society that closely represents something not far off from our own future. The work as a whole seems to call out social media platforms such as Instagram satirizing them.

Exploring the Title Nosedive

The title "Nosedive" is a clever take on the the phrase nosedive, which refers to the downward plunge of an aircraft. The most obvious takeaway is that her scores dives down at such a quick rate that it is similar to the quick decent of an airplane. The downfall is so disastrous she ends up in prison and losing her regular life forever. However, it also is an acknowledgement of how people in this world are constantly looking down at their phones. Through this constant state of looking downward their faces take the shape of a nosediving plane. Due to nearly the entire population taking the shape of a nosedive, it can be said this is an attempt to show that society as a whole is also nosediving.

Paranoia

Lacie's primary concern throughout the episode is her score. She is driven to raise her score in order to raise her social class level to benefit in society. We see Lacie treat other high ranked individuals with a level of almost fake kindness for the sole reason of advancing her score. A sense of paranoia can be seen early on when Lacie "upvotes" one of her coworkers despite everyone else disliking him. After being disliked herself she becomes too paranoid of her own score falling farther to help him out later.

Hyper Reality

This reality Lacie lives in is full of people attempting to live an impossible life. Everyone strives for perfection in their daily life in attempt to capture the most exciting photos. This leads to a constant fear that any behavior or post may lead to a downvote, which ultimately brings down their life. The visual elements of the work show a perception of perfection in this world that they live in. Looking at the various sets used such as the office and the housing everything is lined up and symmetrical giving a utopia like feel.

Discrimination through technology

Throughout the episode it becomes clear that people with lower scores are looked down upon. Starting with the man with the man at her workplace it is clear that he is discriminated because of his score. There is also a sense of segregation between people of high and low scores throughout from the airport, car rental place and the housing complex. The episode seems to criticize much more than just social media by addressing segregation and discrimination.

Visual Elements

The directer primarily portrays society as dull and boring in appearance; using white, beige, and other plain colors for nearly everything. This emphasizes how in Lacie's world everything is expected to be perfect in every way. Through not incorporating vibrant and exciting colors there is no sense of randomness, but structure and order. Along with the visual element of the colors, characters are introduced through a popup that gives us their name and rating. This shows us truly how obsessive this world is with their online rating: the two most important things to know about a person are their name and score. We see characters react to others based on this popup score and often see rejection with ridicule.

Satire

Nosedive is a satirical piece, which attacks the social media centered lifestyle many people in our world are adopting. Recently social media has blown up in usage and appears to only be growing overtime; this has led many to become dependent on their devices and are constantly thinking of their online image. Nosedive takes this poor mindset to the extreme and tests what reality would truly be like if we all invested ourselves into this "online image" phenomenon. Lacie, the main character, lives in a world where social class is dependent on the average rating of an individual. This desire to advance in society leads many to become obsessive with their image and controls their lives. In attempt to raise her score to receive a discount on her apartment, Lacie starts to praise people who have a high rating in order to gain a stronger following. However, this leads her to be tangled in the demands of their higher class, demands which she eventually cannot fulfill. Her score starts to fall before her eyes and she is exposed to the harsh truth of her reality, that people only value the number of a person rather than the actual person. She hears of a man who died because her was disregarded in the hospital due to his score. She herself begins to feel this discrimination as people cut their relations with her, she is seen as a lesser person through the world, and people begin to disregard her existence entirely. Having nothing left to lose, Lacie takes off her mask and begins live her life the way she wants to and expresses herself. After her story it becomes apparent to the audience that those who lead a happy life, are the same ones who are seen as less valuable: Lacie's brother, the truck driver, the man Lacie meets in jail, the comic book fans, and ultimately Lacie herself finds that true happiness is not found on the screen but through self expression.

Importance of Sound

The use of audio in the work is extremely important particularly in regards to conveying the upvoting and down voting. The positive sound that is heard when an upvote is given helps convey a reaction from the audience helping the viewer realize the positive reaction. On the other hand the negative sound that is conveyed when a downvote occurs almost makes the viewer uncomfortable as the score goes down.

A combination of wide establishing shots also help set the scene for the viewer in a perfect world.
