We had only 4 days to complete all measurements and documentation, with a small team of 14. The site we had had two buildings merged into one. The ground floor were used as workplace and gallery, whereas the first floor is where they stay. I am able to understand the history of the building and also knowing about how the detailed ornamentation of the building come about. Lastly, I am glad that I am able to work together with an amazing group of 14 people.

Initially, our group were assigned to document the gallery owned by Fwu Chang, the shop lot next to it (85, Jalan Hang Kasturi) but upon our visit, we realised that the gallery were there only after Fwu Chang carving business succeeded through few decades of hardship. Our group (with the permission of the shop owner) decided to document both building as both of the shophouse are interconnected and we came to a conclusion that it will be rather pointless to only document the gallery but not back to the root of the building, the business itself. It were hectic as our work load were doubled in such a short amount of time. Conflicts, confusion and disagreement were unavoidable but all in all it were great that our group were able to attain the information that were needed with the time, ability and weather constraint.

Therefore, I was more excited than others. In the first day during two hours journey, we reached and this is my first time to deal with Jonker Street. Jonker Street and well known as one of the attraction site to visitors especially the night market. We went to the site and I was quite amaze when I walked throughout the Jalan Hang Kasturi before visiting the building. It is Fwu Chang design and souvenirs shop. When we meet the owner, he seemed like haven’t prepared to meet us so we only allowed to look around but not measured yet. Since there were a lot expensive and valuable stuff and they were worried we will destroyed it. 

In the second day, we start measure the buildings. I was in charge interviewing the owner and his mother. We talked a lot and I feel fun. From another guy, we also knew the real name of Jalan Hang Kasturi and also the reason of some building with unique architecture element. In the other hand, I was also interest to their art and crafts since I had basic knowledge and skill about that. What I knew is, this job was very difficult and need plenty of concentration to complete one carving one the signboard. Due to modern era, many people are not interested to learn this traditional skill.

In the third day, we keep going on to do the measuring. We decided to do two buildings to make it more completed. In the fourth day, we proceed to measure another building Well, it has made us more suffering and tiring because that building was unexpectedly old and complex. Although it had happen some unhappy moment, we still managed to do it. Until the fifth day which is the last day, we continue measured to confirm everything for the info we collect then we back. Overall, we only got four day to do the investigation and observation to the building.

Malacca trip is tiring but interesting. I wish I can visit again with my family.

Due to the natural aging of our building and site, we've encountered several difficulties that we have had to discuss and overcome together as a group. One of which was the slanting of structure, presumably from initial construction failure as well as the result of various renovations initiated by past building owners.
The owner demonstrated to us his respect, dedication and love towards the art of woodcarving and traditional Chinese craft.
Through the process of documentation, I have not only increased my knowledge architectural wise, but also my understanding towards the importance of history and preservation; the seamless merging of old and new. This is my first time to visit Melaka, and surprisingly this is a trip that provide me a lot of experience that I've never gained before. I've learnt to overcome problem with the help of the group.

In Malacca, whole team was study about the measure and drawing by using Auto-cad. We only have 4 days to learn complete the building in site measurement, video shooting and interview section. Its force us to focus but beside doing the project its also a lot of fun and we learn each other better. 

Our building is about traditional design "old style house ". there are two building we have to work on its. We started to divide to small group and start work. In the morning, we wake have having our breakfast at Hotel buffet, then walk to the site. After finish work we visit to Jonker street. It is a famous and nice space in Malacca. There are a lots of delicious food. 

although, rain run though all those days, we overcomes all the difficulties at the end and back. I was so appreciate the time that spending in Malacca. It was a lot of fun and I can   'work' on the site not just on the paper work. This seemingly drab exercise of measuring an old shophouse built in a style endemic to Jonker Street in Malacca proved to be quite the solid experience for my architectural studies. Whilst the building itself is no groundbreaking design, the multiple layers of old and new additions complement each other in a subtle manner. The raw surfaces from the mixture of concrete and wood alongside the compact space planning reminded me of my dear grandmother's kampung house that was made from scratch by hand. As such, even though measuring and documenting the shoplot isn't a stroll in the park or terribly exciting in any manner, it left a strong impression on me. This is especially true for the kindness not quite seen here in KL, I received from the shop owner, his neighbours and even from passersby. Sure we had a tonne of rainfall half the time we were there but I think as my fellow groupmates put it, we all put forth our best foot and did our best to gather as much information as possible.

The most profound lesson I'd say is my observation on how people's demand for design is influenced. Our site in particular, is a mixture of vernacular and chinese culture, tradition and beliefs.
