The pinks stand for the friendship of the people of Lahaina and the nurturing compassion they have for each other. I put a huge fire across my paper because that shows how the fire was so huge in Lahaina and engulfed so much.

I put the Lei Hala pattern to protect Maui and give strength to their people that grew up there. I also put roses to symbolize a couple of things: love and peace that I hope will come back home to Lahaina when Lahaina is being built back up again, and when nature and life flows back through the town.

The next word I chose was devastation. I chose this word because I couldn't imagine losing everything and watching our kupuna suffer is very devastating to see. Even though I'm not on Maui there's still empathy towards everything that's happening. Another word I selected was vanished because all of the history, homes, and family is all gone and it all happened so quickly. It is very sad to see that's why everyone is changing their priorities to helping Maui. That's why I put the maka ihe near vanished because it represents protection, healing and help. I also put the lau symbol near vanish because it means new life or growth and it can help them restart and grow. The last word I put was prayers because the people on Maui really need it. They need prayers for restoration in everyone that's why I put the pewa symbol near support. Pewa represents healing and support can make a big impact on rehabilitation. Even though it won't heal physically it can heal mentally and that's more important.

This masterpiece shows how much I care for Lahaina and the ʻohanasʻ in Maui. For this art piece, I used many different colors. The pink background and the pink lettering stands for the love that people have for maui. The blue stands for protection and healing. The orange/red symbols stand for the fire that occurred around Maui. The green symbol meant a new life and growth for Maui. The bolded words in this art piece are the most important words in this art piece. Ke Akua is bolded because the church in Lahaina was the only building that remained standing during the fires. It showed how powerful Gods power is. This can also help those Ohanas look up to Him and have faith in him to slowly get their homes back. Another word I put down was empathy. The reason why I put this word down is because the people who live in Maui should have love and empathy for one another. Also, the people who donʻt live in Maui can still show love and empathy to the Ohanas by donating food, clothes, and hygiene products so that the families can atleast have what they need to survive and build their selves back up.

Lastly, I put the word "hope" to show that there is still hope for the people and Lahaina. I also put Hawaiian symbols on my art. The symbols that I put were Lei Hala which looks like a pattern of 2 rows of triangles. I also put Maka ihe that looks like an arrow. The last Hawaiian symbol that I put is Lau a diamond with a leaf pattern. The first symbol that I put was Lei Hala. This shows end, done, and died. This represents how some families and places have ended/died. The next symbol, Maka ihe represents help , protection , and healing. This shows how people are helping to heal  Lahaina  and the people. The last symbol Lau  represents leaf, new life, and growth. This shows that we are tying to help grow new life for Lahaina.

The green is how the regrowth of the community and the life in death. The red and orange are the fire that burns deeply. The lei hala normally mean death or done. But for me, it represents how I want this pain to end. In a way I know this part of these peoples lives will never be normal but they can reflect and learn on how they can move forward. The triangles get smaller slowly as they go to the left showing and enhancing the ending of suffering in Maui. Lahaina is traced in black, orange, and red which is the flames and ashes over the area. The pain of losing your home or family can never be recovered but we must go on and bring old memories into the future.

Next, I put brown to represent the dirt and dust that remained. After that, I put blue to represent the rain and water that will wash over Lahaina to regrow their ʻāina. Lastly, I put green to represent regrowth and recovery. I did this again with my watercolor with red at the top, then a little brown, blue, then green. My leaf shapes at the bottom represent growth. It also represents the ʻāina and the mauna.

What came out successful was the columns and the separation between the colors.

I also drew an outline of Maui and labeled Lahaina because Lahaina is a special place for my ʻohana and I. My intentions were to also draw Hawaiian Designs like the Pewa and Kiaʻi. The pewa represents healing and great health for the people of Maui. The Kiaʻi represents protection and healing for all the ʻohana on Maui. My writing and the words I put in sharpie came out successful. Also, the repetition of the Pewa and Kiaʻi came out a very well. Mahalo! Pray 4 Maui!

The big pink Maui in the middle on my art piece is for the color of the island which is pink so i put it for the color of the island of Maui and for how much love goes to Maui and Lahaina. Last i feel so very sorry for Lahaina and the people of Lahaina because of what happened to them but i just hope that Lahaina and the people of Lahaina can go back to there beautiful self and that they can grow back together and be one with each other. I used the Pewa symbol, and put it in the middle, and made a circle of it because a circle goes in a infinite loop. I want Maui to heal. Also, it's the biggest one because I want Maui to thrive, and get back to their normal state. I used the Maka ihe symbol because I want to help and protect Maui so that they could rebuild, and hopefully wouldn't have another big fire again! I used the Lau symbol, because I want Maui to grow their communities, and I want they to get over this tragic event. For, I hope that the kanaka in Lahaina can all work together to make Lahaina grow back and create new life.

     Also, I drew the island Maui and the word Maui to reveal more compassion and faith towards Lahaina/Maui. Moreover, I added/circled the words/phrases: tragedy, devastation, gone, loss, Maui, Aloha ʻĀina, prayers, faith, and hope. Overall, I think my artpiece all came together in the end, showed hope and growth for Maui, and I'm really proud of it.

The colors were red, orange, and yellow, the colors of a fire, but there is brown as well to represent the barren land that the fire leaves behind. I put many lei hala on that side, and especially on the freewrite as that was the more negative part. However, I did add a transition from brown to green to show, once again, that we can recover and heal. After a line of maka ihe, the other side represented the ocean as contrast to the fire, but also because people took shelter from the fires. I put maka ihe, pewa, and lau to represent a form of healing, new life, and protection. This is to show we will be able to restore Lāhainā and Maui, despite the tragedies that have occured.

Hearing that and seeing that on the news made me so sad because of how desperate and rushed they were to stay safe. I used the lau for new growth because even though the fire burned their city the community is still strong and the support from others is beyond compare. I used pewa because healing is needed for new growth and new life. I am very glad I got to share this piece and I hope that it can spread hope to our families on Maui.

Even after the devastating fires, the tree still stands tall. I wanted my piece to symbolize that we too can stay strong. By standing our ground during these horrific events we can recover after it's over. The banyan tree is kind of like a symbol hope. Hope for recovery and hope for healing. I also chose to use dark colors and inks to represent strength and empowerment. The lack of color also symbolizes the darker events that are currently happening around in Maui. Itʻs a smaller piece to show that itʻs the little things that matter, it doesn't need to be big to make a difference.

I drew a line at the border of life and fire because I want the fire to end and the renewing of Maui to live. I also drew mirrored pictures of each side and fire around the left side of the canvas to bring you into perspective. When looking at my piece it appears simple. I did this to show that even the simplest actions can make a difference. Even a simple pule will help uplift Maui. In my art piece I drew Mauiʻs island flower, a Lokelani. I drew a Lokelani because it has many layers. This symbolizes the layers to healing and rebuilding that Maui will go through to get past this event.

It was based on how it feels when you lose a part of yourself, along with whatever you lost. My whole poem was very broad and applied to many things, not just the Maui fires. Tragedy can happen to you no matter your age, ethnicity, background, status etc. It can happen quickly, but the healing process afterwards can feel like an eternity. This allowed me to explain my theories and questions. In my second free write, I expressed my concern and sympathy for those who lost their homes on Maui. in dark blue, I wrote "made me realize how lucky I am. thoughts and hopes to Maui." That way it would stand out against the watercolor and oil pastels. For the symbols, I used lau to represent new beginnings as the fires were put out. The second symbol I used was pewa, which mean healing, to show how the people on Maui are starting to heal. For my last symbol, lei hala, I used this one to reflect on how it is the coming to the end of the fires. Overall, I used these symbol to express my hope for Maui's healing. As you can see, I used a large lau symbol, and behind it were the faded letters of "The Maui Fires" this shows that healing and new life will prevail agains the destructions of the fires. I incorporated those colors because they represent the fire and ocean because when they couldn't find a spot to hide from the fire they had no other choice than to jump into the ocean.  I picked respect because those who were not involved in the situation don't know the pain that others feel. It also pained me to think how many have suffered the loss of others, in this tragic experience. This is why my Maui piece is important to me and was created.

The dark at the upper right hand corner, along with the dark blues and violet hues represents the abiding issues and damages caused by the brushfires, and the tragedies that took place within the island. In contrast, the red, orange and yellow represent the light that we can still find despite all of these challenges, and stands as a symbol to remind us that there is hope, even within darkness. Lei hala and vines are also shown all throughout this art piece, representing the faith that we can have within the fact that the situation will get better. So many people, as well as the environment has been affected by this fire, but regardless, we can still do our best to support Maui and show love for the island and it's people.

However, I spilled a lot of ink from my pen by accident and messed it up. However it is supposed to show how much fire destroyed Lahaina, but over time we can overcome those challenges life offers and let life come back. I used blue because over time there will be peace in Lahaina again. I also used a lot of Huinakolu because the fire was on houses and islands. I also used a Big Pewa because right now we are praying and more healing from all of the physical and emotional damage. Finally I put a bunch of Lei Hala because sadly a lot of Lahaina has ended hover that is why I put some Lau because even though a lot of Lahaina has ended, a new era of life has begun.

Our designs correlate because we all have a symbol(s) to correlate to each other's pieces. Hilina’i and I have the same design and style. Sachi's and Rhyden’s also have the same design and style. Hilina’i and I drew pewa's in the middle of our canvases as a sign of healing because that is mainly what our individual pieces are focusing on. In Hilina’is piece you will notice she drew semi-circles on the side of her canvas. This is to represent the sun rising and also to show signs of life. The sun rays inside of the semi-circles also match Sachi’s art piece but they also represent life. You also may notice she drew huinakolu’s in the middle of her pewa and also on the side. Those are to represent life ending and giving lei. My piece has Maka Ihe as a sign of protection for Maui. I drew the Maka Ihe to protect Maui from any other harm that may be trying to come their way. The huinakolu’s on my piece are signs of the liveliness of the mountains. Inside the huinakolu’s you will find waves that correlate to Rhyden's piece but they also show signs of life. For Sachi’s and Rhyden’s pieces, they both decided to do a block print in the center of their pieces. This block print is a symbol of how we want Maui to come out of this while acknowledging its past and present. The sun represents a new beginning, and the demi god Maui. The three leaves in the middle of the mountain represent new growth that will come from Lahaina’s ashes. Around Sachi’s block print, you will see that the sun's rays represent liveliness and that the light they need in their life will come soon. For Rhyden’s piece, you will find Sachi’s block print in the center. You will also find waves and whales swimming around it. The whales are a symbol of life, how Lahaina was a place of life for whales. Every day was a day of sunshine because the whales would always migrate there. The waves represent a safe place for the whales. Though they all seem basic and small, each one serves a important purpose and hold a deep meaning. For example, the stickers with the suns on them represent Haleakala, and the dry conditions leading up to the fire. The sticker with the outline of Maui with all the triangles on it represents the fires that took place. All of the intrecet designs are meant to send love to maui. Just simply slapping one on, say, your water bottle can show that you care about Maui and that you are offering your prayers. Show that you care about Maui by using these stickers.

I made this piece to represent the fires and the pain on Maui, Lāhainā. The fire and the blood is made to represent how much the community and Hawai'i are affected. As a people, a Lāhui, we come together; praying, donating goods to the families who's homes were lost. That is why the healing and Protection symbols are there. The words on the bottom traced with a thick sharpie are words of support and love. It shows how I am able to be apart of the people who support and love, even if I cannot physically be there.

This piece connects to the mural created with Rhyden, Kealaula, and Sachi because the sun connects with the ink print in the center of Sachiʻs and Rhydenʻs piece, and the pewa design connects to Kealaulaʻs pewa design. We all wanted to show how in the end there will be peace, and Lahaina will be healed and restored.

The small sun in the middle rising up from the mountain represents a new day and a fresh start. The sun also symbolizes how hot it can be on the island, especially in that area of it. The outer sun rays represent the Hawaiian folklore demi-god Maui. The mountain the first sun is coming up from is supossed to symbolize Haleakalā, which in english translates to house of the sun. The three diamonds in the middle represent new growth from the ashes and death that may be above. The row of lei hala going across represent trying to move on from the disaster. But as you can see they are going in the other direction which shows how big of a deal the fires were since they were traumatic for thousands of people. And usually with trauma it takes a while to be able to move on, so the lei hala are sort of being held back for a moment. The 6 maka ihe above the lei hala  are to have protection over the remaining people of Lahaina and the families affected. And to also protect the soil that may still be good and usable under all the ash and death. And at last, the background is pink because that is the island of Mauiʻs known color.  My art piece is one of 4 connecting to Hilinaʻi, Kealaula, and Rhydens art pieces making a mural when placed all together. Our mural connects to tell a story of the despair, how it ended, and the possible future outcome ending with peace.

I colored the letters A and I green and blue to show signs of life. On the M and U side, I painted it red and orange to represent the fire. On the fire side, I drew details like burning trees to show the damage that the fire created. But on the side that represents life, I drew thriving trees to show what Maui was like before the fires. I incorporated that theme by writing all the big bad things that happened to Maui in bold lettering because like how you usually look at the big letter first, many people only look at the bad that is happening with the fires. But if you look closely, you can see that there are good things that happened to Maui in green because good can only grow if bad is around. During the production of my work, I was unsure on what I should draw. I wanted to draw something along the lines of someone holding Maui to represent how we are all caring for Maui, but I couldn’t get the design right. So, I decided that I should just draw what came to mind when I thought of the fires. I thought of how chaotic it was but how even under all of that chaos, there was still hope. That's why I drew it the way I did.The supplies I used for this project were watercolor, Posca pens, Sharpies, watercolor pens, and Expo pens.

I used the colors blue and pink because those are my personal favorite colors. After allowing the art piece to dry over the weekend I spent time and wrote a reflection consisting on the tie dyed piece of paper. I wrote in red pen because I felt it contrasted well and the red represented the color of fire. After having written my whole paged reflection I used a Maui cut out and traced, then cut out the shape of Maui using my tie dyed piece of paper. I then glued the cut out of Maui and added it onto a clear piece of paper in my art book. The tire dye on the blank white paper created something very deep that caused contrast throughout my piece. After gluing the piece to the white paper I wrote around my piece words that I thought related to the tragedy that had taken place in Lāhaina, and scenarios that I felt had a personal connection to me and those around me that learned about Maui. I felt that my piece really reflected and connected the the fires that occurred on Maui because I wrote and talked a lot of how I think it will be impacting the community, and the islands of Hawaiʻi throughout the future. I spoke of how through this tragedy may come great change that may progress us and uplift the lāhui and ʻāina in way we never could of imagined.

I also wanted to write "Mālama iā Maui mai ke ahi" to show that I want Maui to be protected from the devastating fires that have happened there during this time. I marbled the canvas to show how the words can somewhat blur away and leave Maui as the key point of view and the main thing on the canvas. I also used the colors I did to show the water running between each place, the places themselves, and to really highlight and spotlight Lahaina from the others.
