The Witches' discussion of Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 1

The three witches meet in the opening scene of the play; they embody an unreasoning, instinctive evil. The fact Shakespeare opens in the play with the witches tells the audience that this play will be heavily influenced by elements of the supernatural - an issue that the 16th century audience were hyper aware of. In this opening scene, they predict Macbeth’s future and to hint to the audience (foreshadowing) the future of Macbeth; we gather the impression, since they're the ones discussing Macbeth and are wanting to meet him, that they will be influencing him with who they are: evil. They state, When the hurly-burly’s done, When the battle’s lost and won... There to meet with Macbeth." We don't know their intentions with Macbeth, however we do know they are not purse. The witches contribute a supernatural atmosphere to the play as they are the only characters who are able to predict the future and play with Macbeth’s mind.

In Shakespeare's time, witchcraft was believed to be a very strong force and many that were believed to be one were punished at stake. Macbeth is motivated by his wife and by the three Witches, where he gradually becomes more ruthless and evil. The witches play a major role in convincing Macbeth to kill Duncan, they give him three prophecies; "Beware MacDuff, beware the thane of Fife", "none of woman-born shall harm Macbeth",and"Macbeth shall never vanquish'd be until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill". The three prophecies play a major role in where Macbeth believes to bo invincible.

It was believed that the health of the King impacted the weather, Macbeth disrupts the social and political order by murdering King and upsurping the throne. The weather pattern was altered, the thunder, rain and restlessness of animal symbolised the superstition of those that live in Shakespeare's time. Macbeth became guiltless and consumed by evil which was shown through the appearance of the sky. Before King Duncan was murdered the sky was a beautiful blue but after his death it turned an ugly gray which contrasted Macbeth new dark characteristics.

In which Macbeth hallucinates, he sees a floating dagger and tries to clasp the phantom-dagger but fails. The hallucinatory dagger is leading him into Duncan's bed chamber. In the vision of the dagger, the supernatural is once again at work. It may be a vision sent by the witches, but, more likely, it is called up by the witchcraft of Macbeth's own imagination. The supernatural hallucination is foreshadowing that Macbeth is on the verge of attacking King Duncan, in order for himself to be king.
