Circe warns Odysseus about the sirens, “Square in your ship’s path are Seirenes, crying beauty to bewitch men coasting by; woe to the innocent who hears that sound.” (Homer 210) The Sirens could not bewitch Odysseus because he went by with Circe’s advice. And on these islands, they were famous for luring sailors in with their beautiful melodies. The sailors would be compelled to sail to shore and then they would be eaten. The Sirens left the bones of their victims still rotting with flesh on the sand of their beaches. It is known throughout the sailing community of the time that Sirens would lure men like them into a trap to kill them near the islands of Aeaea and Scylla. However, most men would still go past those places without a flick of fear in their minds. Many sailors left behind wives or partners while they sailed long distances. With this in mind, sailors did not try to stop themselves from being compelled because like masculinity back in the day, they believed they could beat the Sirens after they had gotten something from them (something as in sex).
