Sumela Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery dedicated to Mary located at Karadağ within the Pontic Mountains, in the Maçka district of Trabzon Province in modern Turkey.

Nestled in a steep cliff at an altitude of about 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) facing the Altındere valley, it is a site of great historical and cultural significance, as well as a major tourist attraction within Altındere National Park. Due to an increase in rock falls, on 22 September 2015 the monastery was closed to the public for safety reasons for the duration of one year to resolve the problem; this was later extended to three years. It reopened to tourists 25 May 2019.The monastery is one of the most important historic and touristic venues in Trabzon.

This monastery, "Girls monastery" (I don't know if this refers to nuns, or to tome other feature) dates back to 1349-1390 and is also known as the Panaghia or Theoskepastos monastery. It houses some fresco's that I show, but you will see they are badly ruined. I take this information from a good site by the Trabzon municipality, I edited it somewhat: Built on the outskirts of Trabzon-Boztepe this is the only remaining monastery in the city centre. It was first built by Alexious III. Additions were made in the 18th and 19th centuries. Inside are the church built for the archbishop of the monastery, Konstantinos, and his tomb, as well as guest rooms and student rooms. The buildings surrounding the courtyard used to be the service buildings next to the main church, a monks cell, student rooms, the bell tower in the yard and another church belonging to a later period and the guest rooms on the outermost. The monastery complex was built on two terraces and is fortified by high walls. Actively used until the early 20th century and later abandoned.

The construction of the madrasah, which has survived to this day with its perfect structure, started in the Artuqid Period and was completed in 1457-1502 during the reign of Akkoyunlu Ruler Cihangiroğlu Kasım Sultan. Regular cutting was used in the construction of the two-storey, domed, single and open courtyard madrasah. The building, which is interesting in terms of its plan features, stone workmanship and decoration motifs, is located within the social complex together with the mosque and the tomb. There is a fountain and a large pool in the courtyard of the madrasa. The madrasa, which has a facade open to the plain in the south, is one of the largest buildings in Mardin. It is an open madrasah type, within the boundaries of a single courtyard, with two floors and a single iwan. It is made of cut stone and structures.

Nestled on the crest of a 216-metre (709 ft) high hill, the fortress was built by the Venetians during their second occupation of the area (1686–1715).

The fortress was a very large and ambitious project, but was finished within a relatively short period from 1711 until 1714. It is a typical baroque fortress based on the plans of Venetian engineer Antonio Giancix (Antun Jančić)[1] and built by French military engineer Pierre de la Salle. Lastly, when the Greeks overthrew the Turks the bastions were renamed after ancient Greek leaders and heroes (Epaminondas, Miltiades, Leonidas, Phocion, Achilles, Themistocles. The two remaining bastions were named after St. Andrew (Agios Andreas) and the French Philhellene Robert who died in battle on the Acropolis of Athens.
