She was an anti-suffrage activist who was born in 1855 in Hartford. Her father was Marshall Jewel, a prominent politician in Connecticut who was the leader of the Republican National Committee.
Once she rose to prominence for her activism, she decided to move on to fighting women's suffrage. In 1911, she was elected the first president of the National Association Opposed to Women's Suffrage. She was born a slave in Ulster County, NY in 1797. She was bought and sold 4 times and was subjected to violent punishments and harsh physical labor. When she was a teen she was brought together with another slave with who she had 5 children beginning in 1815.
     In 1827, just a year before the slave freeing law in NY, she ran away with her infant daughter Sophia to a nearby abolitionist family, the Van Wageners. They bought her freedom for $20 and even helped her sue to get her son back who was illegally sold into slavery in Alabama.
She moved to New York in 1828 and started working for a local minister.
