Smartphones are blindly enslaving our human connections of conversating, feeling emotion and living in the moment. Smartphones have made big strides in advancing our scientific and medical works but that can't be said the same for our personal lives. While some people may say smartphones are rapidly advancing to "improve our lives", they are in fact deteriorating our minds by disconnecting us from the real world.

In an article written by Laila Chaudhry, a student at Virginia Commonwealth University, she wrote about how mobile phone addiction affects human relationships. In her article she stated, "...it can be inferred that excessive social media use can lead to loss of non-virtual connections." This supports my claim that smartphones take away our human connection of conversating because people loss their ability to have face-to-face conversations.

Elon Journal of Undergraduate Research in communications conducted a study on, "The Effect of Technology on Face-to-Face Communication." The author Emily Drago noted, "The survey asked students to rank the statement on a scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree: “It bothers me when my friends or family use technology while spending time with me.” Seventy-four percent of respondents said that they either agreed or strongly agreed with this statement, while only 6% disagreed. Among respondents, 20% neither agreed nor disagreed." This study supports my claim that smartphones are enslaving our human connection of communicating personally instead of over the phone

In the book “Fahrenheit 451” the author writes, “Will you turn the parlor off?’ he asked. ‘That’s my family’.”(46) This conversation was Montag asking his wife, Millie to turn the television off and her responding with the TV being her “family”. This related back to my claim because Millie became disconnected to the real world by believing that the technology was her family instead of her real human family.

In the book "Fahrenheit 451" the author writes, "Millie, does'-he licked his lips-'does your (family) love you, love you very much, love you with all their heart and soul, Millie?"(73). The conversation between Millie and Montag is an example of how people can become emotionally attached to their technology instead of their real loved ones. Millie believed that the TV people were her family and lost connection to who her real family was.

An article called, "How Your Smartphone Is Making You Dumb—And What To Do About It", talks about a 30 day plan for people to "break up with their phone". This supports my claim that people are too emotionally attached to their phone and not feeling real emotions for actual things like people. If people have to find a break up plan for their phone then that proves that smartphones are taking control of our lives.

In an article called, "12 ways your smartphone is making your life worse" by Natalia Lusinski, she talks about how when people go on dates they look at their phone more than the person their with. This goes along with my claim that people are disconnected from the real world and don't have face-to-face conversations anymore because they are easily distracted by their phone.
