Sonny's Blues, Why at Le Moyne?

I think Sonny's Blues in the common reading this year because drugs have become a big issue in today's world. Sonny ended up in a bad position when he was using drugs but in the end he pulled his life together and proved to himself that he can do good. It proves a point that even if someone has a bad past it doesn't mean that they can't make it up and pull through with a college degree or some type of success. Even if the issue isn't substance abuse, it is a very good life lesson that no matter how big of a hole you've dug yourself into there's always a way out and there will always be a chance to do better.

"All at once something inside gave and threatened to come pouring out of me. I didn't hate him any more. I felt that in another moment I'd start crying like a child" (p. 173).

Burnett, Whit. Black Hands on a White Face: a Time-Piece of Experiences in a Black and White America: an Anthology. Dodd, Mead, 1971.
This quote really stood out because the narrator and Sonny were never close growing up. The comment about not hating Sonny anymore proves that the narrator realizes that he should start treating Sonny differently and start caring about him more.
