  • Leslie Richard Groves was chosen to be put in charge.
    • He, however, was a part of the military and didn't know about science.
  • They needed someone else to supervise the actual science about it. 
    • They found Julius Robert Oppenheimer.
  • The pair was trying to find a good site to use.
  • They explored many areas and found “Los Alamos” in New Mexico.
    • They ended up buying this property.

  • At Los Alamos, there were two types of atomic weapons being created:
  • One using an extremely rare isotope (kind) of Uranium.
  • The other one could also be produced using Plutonium. 
    • This concept was a newer and more complicated design.

  • After working for a long time, Oppenheimer was told they wouldn’t have enough Uranium for one bomb until mid 1945. This shows how rare it is.
  • The plutonium, however, was easier to get.
  • In mid March of 1945, Roosevelt was told that testing of the atomic bomb would most likely be ready by the summer.
    • Enough Uranium was produced.

  • On April 12, 1945, Pres. Roosevelt died.
  • Everyone working on the Manhattan project was extremely upset.
  • The same day, President Truman was sworn into office.
  • After about an hour of him becoming president, he was immediately told about the atomic bomb.
    • This means that the bomb was such a big secret the Vice President didn't even know of the atomic bomb.
  • Just about a month later, Germany surrendered from the war, ending the fighting in Europe.
