This padlet resource contains 3 different strategies for cultivating a sense of thriving in ourselves by utilizing a metaphor for gardening. Each 'seed' contains both the research behind the practice and a simple strategy as to how incorporate this practice into our daily lives. As these seeds are sown into the soil of our daily routines, it is my hope that this will foster the flowers of positivity in our garden for thriving.

Planting Positive Emotions

Positive Emotions are one of the key components of the Flourishing Triangle Framework. According to Barbara Fredrickson, positive emotions, such as joy, contentment, and pride, have a 'broadening effect', in that they broaden the scope of attention and cognition, leading to a widened array of thoughts and action impulses in the mind (Fredrickson, 2004). Fredrickson, in her 'broaden-and build theory', also studied the functionality, or the 'build' capabilities of positive emotions. Positive emotions unlock a variety of physical, social, intellectual, and psychological resources such as improved sleep quality, immunity from diseases, expanded social connections, greater creativity and mindfulness, and improved optimism. Positive emotions also have the power to undo and down-regulate the impact caused by lingering negative emotions and the physiological/psychological stress they cause (Fredrickson, 2004).

One simple strategy to cultivate positive emotions is to think of 3 good things that happened during the day and write them down. These responses can range from work related successes to spending more time with yourself or family. By doing this activity daily, particularly before going to sleep, we are 'tilling the soil' to plant our 'seed of positive emotions'. This allows us to not only cultivate and unlock a variety of resources that positive emotions provides us, such as greater optimism and improved sleep quality, but also become more appreciative of the 'good things in life', allowing us to build ourselves in this 'garden of thriving'.

Planting High Quality Connections

High quality connections, or positive connections, is another of the key components of the Flourishing Triangle Framework. A heightened sense of energy or vitality during and after the interaction, feelings of mutuality as both individuals are actively engaged in the interaction, and positive regard, where we intentionally focus on the positives and see the best in each other, are important indicators to identifying a high quality connection. In a high-quality connection, people feel attuned to one another and experience a sense of worth and value in the interaction. At the individual level, cultivating high-quality connections has a number of positive impacts, such as heightened learning, enhanced self-image, and overall improved physical/psychological health (Dutton, 2003). By focusing on the elements of vitality, mutuality, and positive regard as important markers, high quality connections emphasize mutual development and the positive experience of connecting with others rather than the resources and rewards one obtains in an interaction.

Dutton, in her chapter on 'High Quality Connections' from the book How to be a Positive Leader, discusses how respectfully engaging with others, task-enabling/helping others, trusting others, and fostering 'playful' interactions with others are 4 different ways in which high quality connections can be created. One simple strategy to cultivate these connections is to think of how to inject one or several of these pathways into our daily roles and routines. For example, texting a friend daily might be an important routine, but introducing a facial element, such as a Zoom or FaceTime call can facilitate a greater sense of 'playfulness' in the engagement and allow for more respectful engagement due to the social cues available through one's facial expressions. By doing this activity as a routine frequently, we are 'tilling the soil' to plant our 'seed of cultivating high quality connections', which allows us to view the way we work with others in a different way, fostering more important connections that directly contribute to our own 'garden of thriving'.

Planting a Strengths-Oriented Mindset

There are 3 important classifications of strengths in positive organizational scholarship research: Character Strengths, Impact Strengths, and Performance Strengths. Research indicates that cultivating character strengths, those aspects of our personality that are morally valued, are important markers in facilitating healthy life-long development (Park & Peterson, 2009). According to Hone et.al, utilizing our high strengths can cultivate almost 6 times more engagement in your work and 18 times more overall thriving. Overall, using your strengths, whether they may be character strengths or others, and cultivating a strengths-oriented mindset have a number of positive impacts can allow you to feel more engaged, cope with stress more effectively, become more resilient, facilitate an increased focus and attention to detail, and see a stronger sense of meaning in your work (Mcquaid, 2017).

One strategy to cultivate a strengths oriented mindset is to engage in a character strengths workout. In the workout, list 3 tasks you perform regularly and identify your top 3 strengths (can be done with other strengths important to you as well). By combining the strengths with the regular tasks, you can determine 9 different ways to utilize your strengths in your work and life. Repeatedly engaging in this workout, hence 'tilling the soil' to plant our 'seed of strengths' allows our brain to adapt to this new behavior and changes the way we view ourselves and our work, allowing us to build ourselves and others in this 'garden of thriving'.
