I love the way it smells! All the books lined up, new titles on display, so many possibilities! When I was younger, I loved attending Story Hour and listening to the librarian read book after book. The library makes me feel cozy and happy. Now that I'm a grown-up and a mom myself, I love taking my children to the library and to the fantastic programs for them there. The library is free and accessible to everyone. It is such an important part of a community. My parents were not big novel readers, so there were not a lot of books at home. I remember getting lost in the shelves of the Farmingdale Library on Main Street reading the book jackets in order to decide which ones I wanted to take home. I was a big mystery reader at that time. I loved everything about it: the quiet atmosphere, the smell of the books, and the excitement of using my library card to take my chosen treasures home to read. When I became a mom, I always took my children to the library for story time, crafts, and summer reading programs. I still felt the thrill of using my library card to bring home stacks of books to read to my children. The library card is just as much a symbol of democracy as registering to vote. It means you support and engage in government funded community events that are meant to help you grow as a person and connect with other people in your community. It means that you want a place that houses books so you can serendipitously find new books, videos, magazines, and information by simply coming across it and it naturally peaking your interest rather than have a computer use a questionaire to quiz you and pre-select books based on your current interests. A library card represents the trust and faith our community has in you to borrow, return, and, yes, even pay a small fine if the book is late. It trusts that you will be responsible and do the right thing. It is your step into adulthood. A library card represents your participation in centuries of access to public information and education dating back to the 3rd century BC in Egypt with the construction of the Ancient Library of Alexandria. As a little girl, I spent my summers with my grandmother who neither spoke nor wrote in English. My Nonnie was an Italian immigrant who knew the value of education. Every week, she walked me to the library. I grew to love books over those summer months. Books became my constant companions and took me to places that I had never been. After college, I became a reading specialist who championed the power of reading and the pleasures that come from owning a library card. Without my library card, I would be living in a pile of books, and so would be children.  One of my favourite things to do is borrow the hard cover version of a series so I can read it right after it comes out. Then, if I love it, I buy it in paperback after it is cheaper.

Therefore, we could not join the library.  It simply cost more than my parents could afford.  Fast forward to when I had my own kids. The library was one of our favorite places to visit.  Bags and bags of books came home with us each week.  Now, as a grandmother, I love watching my daughter and grandson visit the library every week.  Libraries ..they are like a vacation without ever leaving home.

Then I ask them to tell me what types of things they can do or get in the library with the card and I fill in what they haven't mentioned or didn't know. I make sure to mention they have "free" access to the materials in the library. A teacher pointed out to me that students may think they have to pay for materials or to attend programs which I never even thought about!
