Reflecting on the numeration systems of Lesson 4.1, choose one country and create a booklet that includes the following.

1. Country Flag

2. Country's famous landmark

3. State the current numerals used in your chosen country and list them.

4. Explain how the country's current system of numeration works. (If more than one system is used, discuss the system used most commonly.)

Write a report on the Rhind Papyrus (see the Did You Know on page 168), Include in your report some of the mathematics problems inscribed on the papyrus.

Hindu-Arabic System

Investigate and write a report on the development of the Hindu-Arabic system of numeration. Start with the earliest records of this system in India.

Duodecimal System

Write a report on the use of the duodecimal (base 12) system of numeration. (See the Did You Know? on page 186) for more information.

Computer Numeration

Write a report on how computers use the binary (base 2), octal (base 8), and hexadecimal (base 16) numeration systems.

John Napier

In addition to Napier's rods, John Napier is credited with making other important contributions to mathematics. Write a report on John Napier and his contributions to mathematics.

pi

Write a report on the history of pi. In your report, indicate when the symbol pi was first used and list the first 100 digits of pi.

US Government Debt

Obtain data from the US Department of the Treasury and from the US Bureau of the Census Internet websites to calculate the current US national dept per person. Write a report in which you compare your figure with those obtained in Exercise 61 on pg. 266 and Example 12 on pg. 264. Include in your report definitions of the following terms: revenues, expenditures, deficit, and surplus.

Scientific Notation

Find an article in a newspaper or magazine that contains scientific notation. Attached a copy of the article and write a paragraph explaining how scientific was used.

Fibonacci

Write a report on the history and methematical contributions of Fibonacci. Write the first 15 terms of the Fibonacci sequence.
