Gold 4: Is Predestination Real? by Mark Tolcher

Using Aquinas' Summa, post your answer using either Aquinas or something else that is credible. Is there an attribute of God that fits? Does ignorance or free will play a role?

Yes, we both think there is a list, but it changes throughout the course of our lives. Just like Santa Claus, our names can switch between heaven and hell. Also, Because of the list, God knows how our lives will turn out, even if it started off rough it could get better. Or opposite. Psalm 139 "O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar''

We do not believe that predestination exists. We do not think this because God gave us the gift of free will which gives man the opportunity to live life how man destines. In the second objection, it states that if creatures and animals aren't predestined then there is no way that man is predestined. Another reason why is because if predestination were real, then man would know about it because God reveals all of his benefits to man. The attribute of God that we have chosen is omniscient.

In the Bible, it is stated that man has free will. This contradicts the omniscience of God because with free will, God can't control our decisions. The real question that must be answered is if God's omniscience overpowers man's free will, which God gave us. Two people in our group do believe in predestination because God gave us the power of free will, so even his omniscience can't over rule that. He knows what we will decide, but does not control what we choose. The person in our group that does not believe in predestination believes this because God is omniscient, and does control what we choose.

The dictionary defines predestination as the divine foreordaining of all that will happen, especially with regard to the salvation of some and not others. Do we believe that predestination is real? No. Do we believe that God already knows who will go to Heaven with him? Yes. The attribute of God associated with this belief is that God is omniscient. "Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure" Isaiah 46:10. There is free will involved in that we do decide our own decide our own destiny, but being that God is all-knowing, he already knows what will happen. Acts 2:21 says, “And it shall come to pass that WHOSOEVER shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” This Bible verse supports our belief that our salvation is completely and utterly based on our actions and their own free will. “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free, but do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh ; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13

Even though we have free will, He knows what actions or decisions we will make. Ali believes that it is not real because of free will and humans can make a split decision with no reason for it.

Yes, predestination is real because God can supposedly see in the all so it would make sense that God can see in the future and know who is going to heaven and who is not. God does know of the future, but he doesn't just sit there and watch it. He allows the people in their lives and stories have their own free will in deciding their own choices. God's sovereign will flows concurrently with out free choices in such a way that our free choices always result in the carrying out of God's will. It is a very complex interaction of wills and choices, but the God can handle any amount of complexity. God foresaw Adam and Eve’s fall. He created them anyway, in His own image, to bring glory to Himself. They were given freedom to make choices. Even though they chose to disobey, their choice became the means by which God’s ultimate will was carried out and by which His full glory will be seen.
(what about Adam and Eve because if He knew they were going to sin, then why did he not create another set of people.)

We do believe that predestination exists, because God is omniscient, all-knowing, and outside of time itself, so He must have already known before we were born. However, that fate can be altered slightly as a result of our actions on eArth. The fact that our fate can be changed a small amount by our actions supports free will instead of totally nullifying it. (grace thinks something a bit different, it's just hard to put down)
