The author references Del Roble School as an example and they calculated the opportunity gap: compares rates of progress toward proficiency among racial subgroups. They acknowledged that racial biases existed in their own work and that these biases made it difficult for some students of some groups of color to succeed.

Racism is the act of treating others differently--as less-then--based on their race. Institutional racism is when we create systems that don't benefit everyone, and fail to question how our creation might be flawed. Anti-racism is the overt effort to question our assumptions and begin to break down institutional racism. We will achieve equity when we as teachers can ensure that all kids meet and exceed their potential by providing an education that encourages their active participation and engagement.
