Coming up very soon is a pretty big holiday that schools take off, so I think that is would be really fun to teach the students the real reason for why they have a week off of school. Sometimes Thanksgiving is just viewed as food and shopping, so its really important to me to show the students the history and how the coming about of Thanksgiving happened. While also bringing in the current components of what makes Thanksgiving the national holiday that we see today.

Affordances:

The story follows Andre which is a very relatable character to the kids and he shows real-life situations. Which is able to give kids the easy perspective of seeming themselves in the story which means they could see themselves having empathy, building connections, etc. As well as they are learning more about social-emotional skills such as helping others, being thankful, and sharing. The way the book is created also is very easily understood and has a set sequence of begging middle and end. Lastly what I would mainly focus on is the way that is connects literacy with real-life traditions and values.

Limitations:

Doesn't really show the actual historical context of Thanksgiving, meaning that they might need to read a nonfiction book or get some teacher help to understand the significance of the story and how it is tied to Thanksgiving. As well as shows just one way of giving which other cultures may have different ways but this book only covers the so called "traditional" way.

Affordances:

The book is able to captivate the attention of the reader and explain the history of Thanksgiving in a way the second graders can understand. Provides visual support so the colorful and detailed pictures can help them comprehend the historical events and some of the vocabulary. Most students already know about the turkey they get and the family gatherings that they have but not the actual meaning of the holiday so that book is able to give them background knowledge.

Limitations:

The book may oversimplify history to make it easier for the kids to understand but that means they are missing out of some important context. Even though it has a lot of pictures at some points in the book there is a lot of text, which could be a struggle for some students to read.

Affordances:

One of the most important parts is how it is interactive which makes it very engaging especially for the second grade group. It provides different ways to understand the text whether that is by reading it, listening to it, or observing it by the pictures. It helps them build some critical thinking skills because of the way the website it set up for example they have to look into the evidence, interpret the different sources, and ask all different kinds of questions.

Limitations:

Some of the text that needs to be read could be pretty high reading level and they need help from the teacher to be able to understand and read some of the words. Some students may also stuggle with navigating the website and having to click all of the different buttons and navigating the map. Also becomes a risk that some students may just click through the material while other students are taking a lot of time on it, so it can be very quick or it can take a while which is hard to determine the best way to handle that.
