         <description><![CDATA[<div>(a) We first meet Nya (2008).  She is walking alone in the extreme heat, on her way to gather water for her family<br>(b) We first meet Salva (1985). He is in his classroom, but he's not paying attention to the teacher, because he is daydreaming about going home after class.<br>(c) Salva's lesson (and daydreaming) is interrupted by the sound of gunfire just outside the school.  His teacher orders all of the boys to run into the bushes, and warns them not to return to their homes and villages<br>(d) Although he was tempted go home, when he sees everyone running for their lives, Salva "runs as hard as he can into the bushes" (p.7)  <br>(e) After 2  years of hearing  about the fighting between the Northern government and the Southern rebels, the war has come to where Salva lives.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>(a) <strong><em><mark>WATER:</mark></em></strong> Symbolizes life and survival.  Nya walked half a day just to fetch drinkable water for her family.<br>(b) <strong><em><mark>BUSHES:</mark></em></strong>  Represents safety.  Salva's teacher ordered the boys to run into the bushes to avoid capture by the rebels<br>(c) <strong><em><mark>RESISTANCE:</mark></em></strong>  The South Sudanese rebels are resisting the government's attempt to create an all-Muslim state.</div>]]></description>
