The launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union would change the US education system indefinitely. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first satellite to orbit the Earth during the Cold War. This caused the US to respond by passing the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) in 1958. The act involved a one-billion-dollar fund to supply highly educated teachers and increase high-level math, science, and foreign language classes. Today, the historical increase of STEM classes is still a part of the US school curriculum.

I picked the Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the deaf and dumb persons.

The one that I picked that interested me and I though also made a really huge impact in education was in 1817. It was called The Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the deaf and dumb persons. It was the first school that opened for deaf children in the US. In 1864, Thomas’s son, Edward Miner Gallaudet, helped start a college for the deaf.

The Even Start program is offered to low-income families as a way to fight the war on poverty. The program has four steps: early childhood education-adult literacy/basic education- parenting education- parent/child interactive literacy activities. I like how this program encompasses many aspects of education, including parental education. Many of these programs hired mothers of children in attendance as an extra way to help out. I think this program is a good model of 'it takes a village to raise a child' as there are many people involved in many ways to ensure the success of the child.

Ruby Bridges was the first African American to attend an all-white elementary school. Soon after she was in these classes all of the parents removed their kids out of her class.

The fist ever kindergarten was found by "Margarethe Schurz" in the U.S. Watertown Wisconsin. The first formal kindergarten was found by Elizabeth Palmer Peabody in Boston MA four years later.
