Back in 1950, in Cape Town, South Africa, my mom who was 20 at that time, was preparing for her first big acting role. She was a very beautiful woman with big brown eyes and full lips, long african braids and skin that shone in the sun like gold does. As the country was still fully affected by terrorism and international opposition to apartheid, many people struggled to live and entertainment was limited. Only rich people were going to the theatre and could do things for their own pleasure. My mom came from a poor family but did everything she could so that they would overcome poverty, however after my grandfather’s death in 1951, she started planning her escape from Cape town to Argentina. My father was a well known sailor and helped her migrate. It took them around 2 months, as they had to be careful with the pirates and the marine police. When they arrived safe to Argentina, my mom was wearing a theatrical dress which she used to wear back when she entertained the rich spectators. They somehow managed to move there for good and I was born in 1957. My mom fell ill in 1972 of a bad case of malaria, she died in a short time after that. She gave me the dress that she wore on her first day in Argentina and when i wear it i feel like she is still with me.
