Job History: Harmatuk previously coached for 12 seasons at Cypress Springs High (TX.) located outside of Houston. Last season, he guided his squad to the regional semifinals of the state's Class AAAAA playoff tournament. Now he is the head coach at Malvern Prepatory School.

Old Coaching Achievements

http://www.chron.com/neighborhood/cyfair-sports/article/Basketball-Coaches-enjoy-spirited-family-rivalry-4109064.php

http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/cypresscreek/article_f75cb78c-02b1-5524-ba65-a642faf876cf.html

http://vype.com/houston/2013/11/17/vype-preview-no-19-the-cypress-springs-panthers/

http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/cypresscreek/sports/athletic-cy-springs-team-has-potent-scorer-in-benedyth/article_dad41f02-2cde-11e1-99f4-001871e3ce6c.html

In 2007, Harmatuk guided Cy Springs to its only district title in program history. And a year later, the Panthers defeated Houston Yates and Monteverde Academy before Erik Williams (now a sophomore forward at Marquette) broke his foot. Cy Springs advanced to the regional quarterfinals that year, but nobody will ever know what would have happened had they remained healthy.

Seasons ago, the Panthers reached the playoffs, but lost to District 18 champion Alief Elsik, 82-73, in the first round on Feb. 22.

Harmatuk attributes the success of the program to his mentor, Randy Gilmer, who coached the Panthers from 1998-2002; Cy Springs went to its only regional final during that span, losing to Bryan High.

“I’m really proud of the growth of the basketball program,” Harmatuk said. “I’ve tried to continue the tradition that Randy Gilmer built. He’s meant a bunch in my career. Dad and Coach Gilmer have developed me as a person and a basketball coach.” John Harmatuk, 40, has 12 seasons as head coach at Cy Springs and is currently on his first season with Malvern Preparatory High School Team. Harmatuk, the oldest of five brothers, grew up in a basketball family, and he starred at guard for head coach Lloyd Long’s Klein Bearkats.

He went on to play basketball and golf at Austin College in Sherman (about an hour north of Dallas) where he earned a Master’s in Education.

“I always knew I wanted to be involved in basketball,” Harmatuk said. “I wasn’t good enough to keep playing it, so the next logical step.”

Harmatuk served as a graduate assistant at Austin while completing his Master’s Degree; he played on the college’s golf team despite not playing on the KHS team.

“They had four good golfers and I just happened to be better than average,” Harmatuk said. “I was just fortunate that they didn’t have to keep my score.”

Harmatuk is the oldest of five brothers, four of whom played college basketball. His father, John Sr., played basketball at Hartwick College in upstate New York.

“It’s kind of our sport,” Harmatuk said. “All of my younger brothers played in high school. It was a sport we grew up around.”

His younger brother, Scott Harmatuk (a 1996 Klein High graduate), played at Fordham University in New York and just completed his third season as the head boys basketball at Klein Collins.

Harmatuk has won three of four games against his younger brother.

John Harmatuk Insurance agency

http://companies.findthecompany.com/l/19840974/John-Harmatuk-Insurance-Agency-in-Houston-TX
http://d1nation.wordpress.com/2010/09/13/coaches-corner-john-harmatuk-of-houston-cy-springs/
