In the way we understand the word modern today, it is true that the US became modern in the latter half of the 19th century. Of course, society has changed in many ways since, but the transition from a farming economy to an industrial economy is still very relevant to our society in many ways

Racism is still very much a problem in America today. While we've made significant strides in equality, a number of socioeconomic factors and attitudes still keep black people significantly poorer than whites (on average, of course). Attitudes of white supremacy still linger. We've gotten better, but there is still a lot more work to be done.

Yes, definitely. Significant social change occurred in these decades, chief among them landmark legislation that restored rights taken away from African Americans after Reconstruction ended - after decades of protests. Latinos also made significant advancements. The "New Left" emerged during these decades and began shifting social norms around drugs, sex, fashion, and marriage as well. These two combined made for a massive shift in social and societal norms from generations prior, who were very restrained. While not every marginalized group in society would benefit during this era, many very much did.

The US government changed in a number of landmark ways during this era, largely kickstarted by the Great Depression. FDR realized that unprecedented government action was needed to try and pull the US out of the devastating crisis. This included, but was not limited to, Social Security and the Works Progress Administration. These were the first steps in establishing the current broad system of social programs we have today, and was the first time in the US that the government offered programs to help struggling citizens. Minimum wage was also introduced for the first time during this era. Another way the US government changed was regulating big industry and factories, through legislation like the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 and the establishment of the Federal Reserve System in 1913. This was the first time the government ever flexed their muscles in regulating corporations.
