Learning Leaders consist of students between the ages of 9-12 who are struggling with poverty and its impacts. Therefore, the group dynamics will be:

Stage 1: Students will be introduced to each other through ice breaker exercises. This stage will allow for students to openly discuss and express any questions or concerns they may have regarding the group as a whole and/or their personal struggles relating to poverty. Additionally, ground rules and expectations will be presented and potentially revised and improved to ensure all students feel understood and heard. Students will also be made aware that violation to any rules, including and especially confidentiality, will result in immediate dismissal from the group. The focus of this stage is to build trust in relationships among members and with the counselor.

Stage 2: Students will engage in activities and discussion regarding local resources, identification of positive and negative emotions, sharing and learning of proper coping techniques, and direct insight into the multiple different ways poverty impacts each individual and/or their family. These activities will be carried out with the intentions of forming connections and meeting personal and group goals.

Stage 3: The conclusion of this group will consist of members sharing what they have learned, practicing coping techniques, and encouragement to remain in contact with each other to urge students to remember they are not alone. Students will also complete a post-assessment to offer the counselor insight into the progress made by each student as well as a follow-up meeting at a later date with each member to assess the impact Learning Leaders had on their daily lives. The follow-up meeting will also serve as a reminder to the students that their experiences and feelings are always valued and seen.

Participative leadership will be utilized in this group as I, the counselor, will not only provide support to students but also engage in activities and discussions while also urging students to lead discussions.
