Raising Bertie is a documentary that followed the lives of three young, African American biological males for six years. Born and raised in North Carolina, the documentary illustrated all aspects of the young males' lives from family, friends, community, and education. Raising Bertie painted a picture of what life is like for African American individuals in rural North Carolina.

Themes: American Dream, Free Will vs Fate, Evils of Racism

We noticed in this film that these young men were under the strongholds of the American Dream- the dream of making it out of one's current situation. Despite a possible inability to attain that dream, this film portrays their individual struggles and fights to be something more than society has restricted them to under the subjection of racist assumptions.

Crip Camp is a documentary that followed the lives of individuals with disabilities at a summer camp. The documentary followed these individuals throughout their lives as they became the leaders of the disability rights movement. Despite progress and change, Crip Camp detailed the challenges individuals with disabilities continue to face today such as lack of accessibility and society created for individuals without disabilities.

Theme: Social Stigmas, Loneliness, Friendship

We noticed that the young men and women who went to Crip Camp wanted an environment where they no longer faced social stigmas and where they could feel accepted. They were able to build lasting friendships that changed their perspective of the world, but as the camp ended they were reminded just how lonely the real world could be because it had regularly tried to exclude the disabled community.
