Born in Brewerytown, Philadelphia in 1953, Darryl McCray was raised by his mother and grandparents. McCray was not part of a gang, but he would write, “Cornbread,” on the walls next to the gang members. Darryl McCay was sent to juvenile detention for two years. McCray later worked with the Philadelphia's Anti-Graffiti Network and Mural Arts Program to help combat the spread of graffiti in the city.

If your wondering, the name Cornbread from the chef who, despite Daryl's repeated requests, refused to make the cornbread.

Darryl McCray is the world's first graffiti artist. he and a group of friends started tagging Philadelphia, by writing their nicknames on walls across the city. Since his tagging days, McCray has a close relationship with The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. he went to Strawberry Mansion Junior High School. There, he had a crush on a girl named Cynthia Custuss. To win her attention, he wrote "Cornbread Loves Cynthia" all over North Philadelphia.

Darryl McKay is now continuing to build a career in licensed consumer products, working with leagues. In 2021 he married Consuela Sanchez. Now he is a public speaker and talks about him as a tagger, and also a youth advocate.
