Faustian elements and archetypes remain prevalent in modern media. In the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies--Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man’s Chest, and At World’s Ends-- many of the familiar characters find themselves involved in making and breaking many deals and following established plots lines that the viewers have seen before. While the motivations of each character differs, they each choose to give up a piece of themselves--some figuratively, and others literally--to gain things they desire.

This allows the viewers to see them in a more selfless light in comparison to other characters within the movie.
While their figurative deals with the devil may have not come to fruition, they still show that not all devils are supernatural and not all deals are fulfilled.

The song begins with the deal that was made with the First Brethren Court stating "The king and his men stole the queen from her bed and bound her in her bones." This refers to the binding of the sea goddess Calypso. In exchange for binding her, the men of the sea gained power it was no longer being controlled by her. The first brethren court made an agreement with Davy Jones that Calypso would not be released for the vengeance and havoc that she would unleash on the world.
This song and the movie also helps the audiences better understand the archetype of a lover's betrayal. The views later learn that it was Davy Jones, the lover of Calypso, who told the court how to bind her. His betrayal is ultimately revealed at the end of the movie, when Calypso refused to aid him, and the Brethren Court, in instead she creates a vicious maelstrom that impedes both the Court's and Jones's cause.

In the movie, the song serves as a call to arms for the people of piratry. With the lines "The bell has been raised from its watery grave, hear its sepulchral tone?" The bell is a symbol for this song. It is meant to be sung at a moment of great injustice that must be stopped with a united front. The catalyst for this being the mass hangings happening in the beginning of the movie. Once the song is sung, the members of the Brethren Court are to "turn [their] sails toward home," meaning that they must unite to bring down this great evil or injustice facing the world.

The characters of the text are living both figuratively and literally fustian lives, however they are not always faced with the consequences that John Faustus faced--though hit is arguable that Jack did.
