Learning Engagement: Mailbox with school community individuals and regional communities

Why? Helps students to see the different jobs and individuals who help to build the community within our own and other regions.

Resources: mailbox, postcards, pictures of school community individuals (lunch ladies, custodians, maintain individual, etc.)

Central Idea: We take care of ourselves when we connect with others by building healthy relationships

Learning Engagement: Place the objects on tables and ask students to discuss what our next unit might be about

Central Idea: Living things have essential needs for their well-being.

Concept: Living things vs. Non-living things

Learning Exercise: Students sort living things vs. non living things in a hula hoop sort. Students will be asked how they can identify if something is living and what it needs to survive.

Why? We want them to know essential needs of living things and how they contribute to their well-being.

Learning Engagement: Google Slides with pictures containing pictures of different places to live with sounds representing those places

Why: To help students visualize and conceptualize different locations and environments where people live. And answer the question: How might a change in your living situation impact your life?

When: Beginning of Social Studies Unit (Provocation)

Central Idea: Making informed choices can impact our overall well-being.

Concepts: Responsibility, causation

Learning Experiences: Students will be looking at menus from local restaurants and fast food restaurants. They will need to make 3 meal choices for their day using a budge of $20. When looking at the menus they can choose to eat at 1 restaurant or multiple restaurants. They will be prompted to make healthy choices that we can reflect back for the reminder of the unit.

Why: Students will be using this provocation to reflect on their choices while we are learning in our health and ELA unit. As well, they will begin their budget making skills with this provation and we will reflect back on how well they did and if they used their addition strategies to be successful and not go over their limit.

When: Begining of our Module 8 ELA and health unit. Around first week of May.

Central Idea: The foods we eat serves a fuel for our bodies and provides essential nutrients that support various bodily systems

Concepts to be developed: The foods we eat serves a fuel for our bodies and provides essential nutrients that support various bodily systems. The food choices they make can affect different structures within our body's function such as organs, cells, muscles and other systems in our body.

Learning Engagement: Students will get a bag with a chef hat, apron, utensils and healthy recipes. Why? So they can appreciate the direct connection between the food they eat and their overall health and well-being. It will encourage students to adopt lifelong habits of healthy eating for optimal physical and mental health.

Central Idea: Living things interact with their environments for survival and growth.

Concepts to be Developed: We are going to focus on growth, survival, form, and function in order to get a better understanding of how living things interact in their unique habitats. All of these concepts relate within our ELA and Science units.

Learning Engagement: In our learning engagement, we will be dissecting a flower in order to identify the parts of the plant, how the parts work, and then discuss the importance of each part to impact the environment around the plant.
