Nuclear advocacy group the World Nuclear Association found that the average emissions for nuclear are 29 tonnes of CO2 per gigawatt hour (GWh) of energy produces. This compares favourably with renewable sources like solar (85 tonnes per GWh) and wind (26 tonnes per GWh) and even more favourably with fossil fuels like lignite (1,054 tonnes per GWh) and coal (888 tonnes per GWh).

It is commonly refined into various types of fuels.

A pro of petroleum is that it's a very useful in the production of fuel, such as gasoline. Nearly half of U.S. petroleum consumption is for gasoline. Oil also produces distillate which is used to create diesel fuel for trucks, trains, boats, and barges, and heating oil for homes.

A con of petroleum aside from the fact that's in an un-renewable energy source is that the toxicity of petroleum related products threaten human health. Many compounds found in oil are highly toxic and can cause cancer (carcinogenic) as well as other disease. Studies in Taiwan link proximity to oil refineries to premature births. Crude oil and petroleum distillates cause birth defects.
