This period of growth is huge for the child and the mother. Infants go from simple reflexes to responding to stimuli to interacting with their environments. At this age babies communicate through crying. When there is not a good adjustment between the mother and child the infant can develop a high-pitched cry undifferentiated from other cries. This can cause the mother to feel a failure to the infant. Abusive mothers may lack support systems. A mother's own conflicts may mean the babies own needs are being unmet. There are also cultural considerations such as some cultures bedshare until around five years and see anything else as neglectful.

Maltreated children age one through four face a complex series of challenges. This time period is imperative for the beginning of sexual development and autonomy. While current research shows that children should not be shamed for seeking pleasure in their bodies, some cultures do not see these actions as appropriate. At this age period it is imperative that children that caregivers are there when needed.

The "hallmark of this period should be learning" (Crosstown 53) but the abused or maltreated child will begin to show obvious delays because of lack of opportunities for optimal growth. While children of health development are learning cause and effect by age eight, children are learning cause and effect due to consistency of parenting. Those without this gift of healthy development lack this and "causal relationships are not clear," (Crosstown 53). The development of the superego, imperative at this age may be hindered by their neglect or abuse.

At this stage the abused or mistreated child may become "disillusioned with the educational system," (Crosstown 54) resulting in truancy and behavior problems in schooling. By this age a parentified child, or one who has been subjected to role reversal with their parents is now skilled in the tasks that they have had to acclimate to. Such as being the caregiver to other children for long periods of time, which is categorized as neglect under the law. However culturally, these practices can be seen as normal or of necessity. A sexually abused child in this age has particular struggles not only with the sexual abuse, but also with potential parental alienation, particularly in the case of sexually abused girls.

Adolesence

In adolescence sexually abused girls may try to gain some distance from their abusers, especially if peer connection has been established prior to abuse. Meanwhile sexually abused males may try to free themselves of peer connections. In the family setting a brother witnessing the sexual abuse of their sister may identify with either the victim or the aggressor. "Acting out abusively... on his siblings... or less frequently, attempting to be protective of his sister," (Crosstown 55). An adolescent who has been subject to this type of abuse my intrinsically link it to their value or develop body issues such as anorexia nervosa in an effort to "feel less sexual in response to their developing bodies," (Crosstown 55). For an abused adolescent healthy role models can make all the difference.
