During WWII many people got mob mentality.  It started with Hitler blaming the minorities for their problems and the Germans' were looking for someone to blame. No one wants to be the one to stand out or the one who is made fun of. The First book in the Divergent series tells about a society where everyone follows the rules and does what they are expected. The Abnegation are expected to help other people before themselves, just as the Dauntless are supposed to be brave. Most kids are expected to stay in the same faction and when they don't it's a shock to everyone and their family shuns them. It's the same way in our society.
