Designing classroom thinking can really stimulate the creativity of students at different levels. I think it is necessary for the students to find a potential problem themselves, to find out the problem with our guidance, and then to try to solve it in the groups along these phases. It seems very fun and interactive.
Something similar, but without digitization we did it years ago. The kids explored which games were played by our ancestors. They made toys with grandparents who were happy to help, described the games in a small book and learned how to play them. It was a lot of fun. The project lasted several weeks.
We could continue with creating similar or completely new games that we had that idea but also the time needed.

1. empathise: identify the problem
2. define: define the context (we need to use the binary system)
3. ideate: think of a solution

I really liked the example with 1st graders and designing the ultimate animal. The process itself can be applied to many tasks and games and it encourages students to think outside of the box. It is useful (videos are great example). It helps students to think differently or outside the box, they can go deeper into the problem. We can rearrange our lessons in such a way that they follow the design thinking process. For example, after covering a topic I can put them in pairs or groups and give them tasks in such a way that follow the design thinking process (questions, interviews, researches, combining their ideas, creating a prototype etc.).At the end we need to give them a feedback as a revision process and students have an opportunity to represent their work.

I did not know this concept. I think I'm very close to what we need to use to let the students try, make mistakes and with that, learn better. As far as I see it, I would use it on older students who would be creating games for youngers students. This way the older students would gain a lot more htna you would initially think. They would revise the things they have already forgotten and at the same time the activity would make them more engaged and creative.
I would even go a bit further and involve the older students into some teaching - explaining how the games work. I have already tried that and it worked out great. The younger students were more eager to listen to students and the older students felt proud and important.

Of course the process of design thinking is useful fo all of us. Bringing design thinking to our classroom means improving our students’ talents and abilities. It helps students see how to tackle complex problems. My students and I are partners of an etwining project which is about bullying. At the beginning of our project, I let my students make interviews with bullied students. I wanted them to empathize their situation.Then my team observed our school environment and tried to get information and created an online survey about bullying. According to their findings they defined the reasons of bullying. They tried to find solutions to decrease the bullying event at school. They handed out flyers that we had designed together in order to inform the students and increase awareness about bullying.

I think I can rearrange my lessons in a way that they follow the design thinking process. For example, theme is emotion. Firts students can find something about five primary emotions (empathise phase), the second they can learn about how and when we use each emotions (define), the third they can imagine how each emotions look and put it on the paper (ideate). The fourth they can make prototype about one emotion with different material (collage, clay,..) and in the end I can test what they learn.

I think the process of design thinking would be extremely useful and beneficial for my students. I can see how it could easily be facilitated with the Bridge 21 Social Constuctivist Teaching and Learning model that I am already implementing in the classroom. Didactic play is a process of building knowledge rather than "absorbing" it. My students can create games in which players need to have knowledge about certain mathematical content. I think that I could organize group work.

For start they could play some similar game – which does not have to be computer game.

Then they can establish all facts about that mathematical content which player need to know. Students can also define what is additional knowledge – what can be used like jocker or extra points in the game.

Then they can pick the form of their game – on gameboard or in some other form and design tasks for that form of a game. Every member of the group can have specific task – design of a board or other platform, story, tasks for every level and right answers.

At the end every group can test their game in other groups, and if the game is good designed it can be used in other classes…

For me, after 40 years of education, it is very important for my students to form learning experiences. Now, ever since we entered the eTwinning platform, we have learned and experienced many web tools. Because I have small pupils, 6 years old, even 5 years old, I used the puzzle. Game design is a very complex process of creation. Methodological, scientific, then concept and complexity must be taken into account. We do not play for the sake of playing. We have to pursue a goal. The colors used are very important. I have noticed from experience that students are more attracted to lessons, the themes written on colored paper, than on white paper. The game develops students' critical thinking, empathy, but above all digital competence.

I think the process of design thinking is extremely useful for my students. I can see how it could easily be facilitated teaching model which I already implement in the classroom. Students can develope the 21st century skills.

I ‘d like to use the Design Thinking in the next school year with my future six-year-old children. My idea takes inspiration from Milano Expo 2015 when I went there with my daughters. We visited many stands but I was deeply hit by the German one.In the German stand we saw a very nice and useful way to let grow a great variety of vegetables and plants by using and recycling inexpensive materials and tools, I was so surprised that grew in me the desire to do the same thing at school. But until up now I didn’t anything. For the next school year I could try to realize something similar. Therefore I need to translate my desire into a learning scenario, into needs, problems, skills, objectives, topics, activities...According to the Hasso - Plattner Institut of Design I could use the five phase model. First phase ( empathise): preliminar survey about how to make our classroom more comfortable and familiar. Children say their ideas, among which I hope to find my same idea. Second phase ( define): let’s vote the different proposals. Let’ s discuss about the problems we have to solve in order to create a small garden in the classroom, by using and recycling inexpensive materials and tools, such as plastic bottles, wooden pieces and so on. Third phase ( ideate) Children find many solutions and make a picture of their proposals. Fourth phase ( prototype): children do a prototipe of their idea by using the material at their disposal. Fifth phase ( test): we’ll see our plants growing up and, at the same time, our children’s reading and writing abilities growing up. Ok. For today it’s enough. Tomorrow the game design ( perhaps).

I thins the process of design thinking is so handy in order to provide our students a way to connect knowledge and real experience. At the moment in some of the topics we have been doing along the year I have tried to include this process in my lessons with more or less success. First, my learners are able to create games in which players must have knowledge of certain French language content. I encourage them to organize group work.
To start with and for a goal of anticipation and motivation, they can play a classic game, which does not have to be a computer game.
Then, they can establish all the facts about this linquistic content that the player must know. Students can also define what extra knowledge is - which can be used as extra points in the game.
Then they can choose the shape of their game - on the game board or in another form - and design tasks for this form of play. Each group member can have a specific task - designing a posters and illustrations, a story, tasks for each level and good answers.
In the end, each group can test his game in other groups and, if the game is well designed, it can be shared in other classes and even using a platform so that it can be used by other students. outside this class.

For example, students can think of two animals, about their main caracteristics and try to design a new animal out of them by giving to a new specie common caracteristics from both. Yes and no. No, I do not want to design a game. Yes, I can rearrange my lessons to follow the Design Thinking (DT) process. I am a teacher trainer and my students have one course where they learn how to plan a scheme of work, and another course, school practice, where they apply their plan. Here is how I will adopt DT in former course:

EMPATHISE - go to a primary school and during the breaks listen and take notes on the songs/rhymes children sing and listen;
DEFINE - choose one from the songs/rhymes collected that you consider adequate for primary school in terms of vocabulary, message, level of difficulty;
IDEATE - research information about the song, style, singer, composer, main musical features, related songs, and write a mind map with all this;
PROTOTYPE - write a scheme of work for a full unit and the corresponding lesson plans.
TEST - apply the lesson plans during school experience and collect evidence on what worked or not.

I had nt heard of design thinking before. However the more I read about it the more I think that as educators we do this alot. I think in many lesson plans we naturally go through this process but I didn't know that is was an official process with a name. It reminds me a project based learning. For any topic students can be encouraged to adapt this process. For younger however they need to be guided thorough it slowly. Yes, the process of design thinking is useful. If I rearranged my lessons, that would mean that my students and I could join and together be more empathetic to each other. They would know better what the objectives of my course are, and I would learn more about their personal traits and needs when facing a new topic of the course. A design thinking approach in the context of a project on a game design with my students would start with brainstorming on the first day of school and continue with that on the first days of class so that their perception of the importance of involving in the design is clear. Every day just 5 minutes, on the first week of school, before I start with the topic of the day. I teach Spanish to English speakers. Then with that information I would reflect on possibilities and google to explore what is on the market. It would take me about another week, but this time alone, to reflect on possible games according to the brainstorming and comments they made in class on the first 5 days. Then, I would show to them my thoughts and suggestions of games based on the brainstorming and comments on the first 5 days of class. We together would discuss for 2 days just 10 minutes before I start the Spanish class. This is what I think would be my way to start tackling the need of a game design or the designing of different games to be done in the classroom.

I have no doubt that the design thinking process is useful for building very productive and motivating learning experiences and contexts.
I would like to be able to rearrange my classes according to the design thinking process ... however, the number of students per class, the setting and equipment of the classrooms in Portugal, the size and contents of the curricula .. . makes the implementation of this work methodology very difficult. Teachers and students are hard pressed to meet the specific curriculum for each year of schooling.

Design thinking is a very useful method and it should be implemented by teachers of various subjects at all levels of education. However, it IS time-consuming, so probably with the existing curriculun I will be able to use it only now and then. Last year I participate in Designathon Works and it was fabulous. In 1st work kids had to think about destroying forest and they had to design prototype which will help forest to grow or to be safe. Imagination of kids was spectacular.
2nd Designathon work was with my students (who are with SN) and with gifted one. They thought about how to save water. Even my students had a few ideas and I was so proud of them. I am trying to include design thinking in my lessons as it's showed as a great way to learn about life situation.

I think that it would be easier if I was a primary school because I would have more time with my students. I have 5 classes and I have 2 or 3 hours per week with my classes and I have to give the themes and contents defined in the planning. So it’s very difficult to rearrange my lessons but I could occasionally do so. Now, in the 8th grade classes (13-14 years old), we are beginning to talk about life in the city and in the countryside (advantages, lifestyle, etc.). Next year we will talk about the new technologies, the discoveries of science, art, the environment and new professions. So, I could challenge them to try to imagine and draw the village or city of the future. The challenge would be to see how they solve environmental problems: how to reduce water consumption, energy? What transports do we use? Where do we work?... They could make a model or a debate about the ideal place to live.

Game Design could be closely related to Design thinking because students should find an attractive way to catch their partners' attention to play their game. They have an objective and they have to find the way to get the others play. The more creative they'll get, the more playful the game will be, the more attractive to their partners and the more their partners will learn. It's a win-win experience because the "game designers" would be really proud and would feel really confident about themselves.

The design process itself is already a learning experience: students start with an initial challenge (problem-based learning) and generate a group response (cooperative work).
Any of the classroom projects in which you work can be gamified. The strategy is to involve students in this process of gamification and thinking design, not only for students to learn through the game but through the creation of the game, a process that comes into play, in addition to all the positive factors of gamification, the advantages of teamwork for the realization of a final product that they will have to share with their peers.
This methodology places the student at the center of the learning process and makes them participant and responsible for the result.
The utilities? Confidence, self-esteem, team work, problem-based learning, creativity enhancement, service-learning, win-win experiences ...

The process of design thinking is very useful for constructing learning experiences with my students, especially during language classes where we tackle different topics. We actually did something very similar when talking about the environment and recycling. One of the idea of my high school students was to make jewellery out of plastic products in order to reduce plastic rubbish. After defining the problem, the students made drafts of different necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings and we discussed what plastic material could be used for what. They presented their ideas in front of the class and then they (we) made some the jewellery. There was also a jewellery exhibition in our school library. So, of course lessons can be rearranged in such a way they follow the design thinking process but it takes a lot of teacher’s preparation and time (what we usually, unfortunately, lack of). The process is perfect for designing games because if you want to create the game, you need to follow all the phases outlined above.

Yes. We have to make some changes in education and reinvent it. The model of traditional school is all worn out, and design thinking could help to break the old paradigm and develop a new mindset. With design thinking, work proposals and challenges are born from student’s desires and motivation in a process that is important by itself.
Design thinking facilitates the existence of learning environments with autonomy, flexibility, a place where creativity blossoms and students work happily and collaboratively.

“Empathy, defining, ideate, prototype and test” in my class, students already put some of these in practice. In my school every 3 month´s we develop projects, and do several presentations and games for an interactive exhibition for the education community.

In the project of creating a game design with my students I could pick the theme for this trimester “An idea to change the world” and encourage them to use the 5 phases of design thinking. Design thinking is very useful even if if you have very few lessons per week (like in my case) an a lots of things to do, it might be complicated to carry on effectively in a classroom. In any case you can dedicate some time to this activity, having the advantages that students become more autonomous in their learning process (so they can study by themselves some parts to be discussed later all together using the flipped classroom approach) and more engaged in the subject, so the want to learn to overcome the difficulties they have to come out with their project design.

I believe that the project design approach can be used also for not big projects: for instance you can introduce some new topics using this approach (in the Math book I use in my classroom they do exactly this and I use cooperative learning to carry on the proposed activities).

Once students are familiar with design thinking, you can ask them to design some games, related in some way to the topic they are studying in that moment.

What I do think, actually, in that to carry on activities like these you need adequate spaces and adequate tools: and I think this is the biggest issue in my school.

I believe the process of design thinking is useful and can be used in the classroom. This approach can be used in the context of games. In our school, the students did a survey on the free time activities, and interests of primary pupils in the extended school program (grades one and two). They used this information to create a variety of games for them. They made dominoes, mini Xs and Os games, games similar to Jacks, cup and ball games and traditional Mlin games. The grade 6 students enjoyed making them, and the grades 1 and 2 enjoyed playing them in class.

In order to create games, we use design thinking but in a low level because unfortunately we have only 1hour/week. Students are asked to complete a form with some characteristics of the game they will create: who is the audience, what skills do they think their audience will have , define the scenario (characters, interactivity, rules, levels of difficulty, scenes) and then proceed to coding.

I just understood, that last school year I implement it on one of my class project - without realizing it!
I teach German and my students were so excited when I showed them the video clip of the german song "Deutschlehrerinnen"

(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xve-C81J7KQ), that they decided to make their own! They split into groups by themselves (screen writer, actors, singers, designers, video montage, director). In only one week they prepared everything and it took us 4-5 weeks to finish the video clip. All my other classes viewed the final outcome and it was THE only discussion during breaks.
It was fun, but also time-consumming. But we ALL enjoyed it!

As I see it, design thinking can help students understand and solve real life situations such as solving problem tasks they can face in real life. What I find difficult is how to implement it into the different subjects, I teach English. For example, it would be a good idea to follow this design thinking process to write a puppet theatre play for younger students. Students would have to work in teams to create the puppets and the stage with the help of other colleagues such as art or technology teacher.

In the context of a project on game design, students could create their own board game based on a board game they already know, such as trivia or snakes and ladders where they had to design questions or challenges (connected with the subject) to win the game. The five stages mentioned in the design thinking process would definitely help them reach their goal.

I find the concept very interesting and useful. Whenever we can get the students to participate in the production of knowledge, to question, to reflect, to propose solutions, to collaborate in learning, we certainly have enthusiastic students and success is guaranteed.
The way to adapt this concept in our classes is that it is a little more difficult. From the examples I have seen, one factor is very important ... time. When you spend only 90 minutes a week with students and with a curriculum ahead, it's difficult, but it will not be impossible! My future planning will take into account the concept of design thinking, I hope!

I'm a big fan of Design Thinking! However, it is easier to make use of it in the students' own language, not so much in a foreign language, at lower levels and in mixed-ability classes. I find it easier to develop activities that make use of Design Thinking in Citizenship lessons. In a language class, design thinking is very useful in classes dedicated to culture or traditions of some nation. I allows you to bring out the creativity in students but also to usefully combine it with language structures. I have already used it with my students in a class called "Who stole Mona Lisa". At first we discussed about the 'most famous painting in the world' and I presented them with the historic robbery of Mona Lisa. After that students imagined a story - 'How to steal Mona Lisa from Louvre ?'- in groups. At the same time they were revising the past tenses in French. They presented me their versions of story and discussed which version is the most accurate one. In the end I presented them with the full article about robbery. The same activity could be organized as a web-game or board game developing - something like Cluedo o an online detective novel.

I teach Computer Science in primary school. I started using Minecraft this school year. My students have a task to build a school that they would like to atttend. First, we agreed on how this school shoould look like, what rooms should it have, and what kind of surroundings should it have. Then we devided the choirs (students who will make a building, students who will make a playground near the school, ..).

Now, that i am being aware of design thinking, next time I could ask my students to make a survey in which they could gather informations from their classmates on how they imagine their school.

I was appointed by our school management to conduct several open lessons based on design thinking (coding and robotics) during the next school year. I'm sure I will return to this course to get the concept and more ideas.

Design thinking is process my students often use to realize user interface for the applications they develop. It is also applied in the design of robots with Arduino and Raspberry, and in several other "hands on lab" projects they are involved at school

For the moment our STEM lessons are based on the R&D concept (research and design) and the 7 steps of exploratory learning (In exploratory learning the students learn new information either through experimentation or using their prior knowledge and some guidance from the teacher) from problem to solution by research and reflextion. This is related to the five phase model.

They started to play with birds, insects, dogs, cats in the garden. places such as shelter, dining area, water drinking place. They destroyed what they did at first. Then they started to do what they would do all over the garden and started to create a regular living space for natural living things. Creativity and originality are in the nature of man. On the basis of subject and subject, we have to give the students the things we will teach not by dictating them but by dictating them. If we can do that, I think we have a lot to learn from them. We have to free the students.

It's rather difficult to manage a design thinking approach within the limits put by some didactic ideas - so I think it is more realistic to introduce gamified aspects into lessons. We have a relatively strict regulation from the subjects that define how a lesson should be created and held - so for a project it is alright to break up this structure, but in general we are expected to follow that. These constraints do not make it easy.
It also depends in how far the subject matter offers a challenge to rise up to - I think as soon as the challenge is not the study of vocabulary, but something else, it might be easier/easy to introduce game design into the lesson planning.

It would be difficult because I am with my stiudents only for 45 minutes, 2 times a week, with older ones 3 times a week. I would need more time. We have no money for any materials so we will probably recycle. I believe it is possible but ona amuch smaller scale.

I feel that it is very useful and is excellent for fostering the children's creativity but unfortunately as a result of our rigid curricula in school, we do not get enough of an opportunity in class to implement gamification through out all areas of school.

Testing design thinking process with primary school pupils maybe is easier than with teens. I say this, because it happened that when I proposed games or an activity different from the frontal lesson some students disagreed. But I will go on in this way, it is our task to show the paths giving them autonomy and confidence.

This can be done in other countries, but not in Croatia, because there are differently organized classes and time that children spent in school. I am a subject teacher and I would have to design other teachers with themes that we could work together in one day. Such a type of teaching we have once a year and is called "Project Day" but it is impossible to implement it on a daily basis. It takes a lot of time and work together to do this.

These examples are really great. Unfortunatelly in Croatia is really hard to do something like this because of curricula we have in subjects, lack of time, lack of materials and it is not the way we are used to think. All I have seen in videos are skills useful for learning and for real life. I can try to do something with pupils, I believe they can find very creative solution. Hope one day they will be collaborative and use the concept of design thinking
