Scylla, in the Odyssey, was a sea monster who would haunt rocks of a narrow strait. Ships who would, sail through the straight would loose at most 6 men because of its darting heads. In this novel, Homer describes this horrible creature having '' 12 dangling feet, 6 long necks, and grisly heads with 3 rows of sharp teeth." Her voice is likened to the yelping of dogs.

Once they have passed the Sirens' island, Odysseus and his men must navigate the straits between Scylla and Charybdis.
