FDR's Presidency and Legacy on the US:

FDR was the president of the United States during the worst times in America's history. We had just come out of the World War I and the roaring 20's booming time period was coming to an end. It came to a sudden halt when Black Tuesday hit and bam, the Great Depression had begun. People were in some of the worst debt, the economy was torn to shreds and there was no trust within the banks. FDR came in and transformed the US throughout the Great Depression and World War II. One thing he did to gain American citizen's trust is a series of radio chats known as Fireside Chats, that gained trust from the people and made them feel like they were going to recover from this whole mess. Here is an excerpt of FDR's Fireside chat on Backing Up the Banking System:

This infographic is very interesting to me because I play soccer, and therefore to see how much less a woman professional soccer player makes than a male is unbelievable. The gap I find the craziest is the pay difference for the World Cup Winner bonus. A woman professional soccer player who wins the World Cup will get a $99,000 bonus, while a man can make up to a $400,000 bonus.

This political cartoon does a good job showing how the top 1% CEO's and people who hold high rank positions control a lot of the nations money, while the other people in the world are left with little money but still work very hard. According to, Money.com, "The top 1% of families nationwide made more than 25 times as much as the other 99% of households." This is a crazy statistic to think about because there is so much inequality in America today. 45 million Americans are living in Poverty today, roughly 14. 5 percent of people. The dictionary definition of poverty is: the state of being extremely poor. These people are living with less than $2.50 a day. Imagine this. They cannot afford a home and usually can't get the money they need to go to college. This is not fair because they really are never given the chance to create something of themselves because they can't escape their situation. This whole idea contributes to the definition of American Identity because of the idea that if you grow up with little money, you are going to always stay there no matter how hard you work, or if you work hard you will be able to achieve your American Dream.

These statistics caught my eye. It is crazy how many people have to deal with this every year. It is very sad that very young kids are exposed to this. A lot of times they do not speak up or tell anyone because they are scared of the negative stigma around the topic or people not believing them. Many victims feel as if the assault was somehow their fault and they could have done something to prevent it from happening. Lately, more victims have been coming out and sharing their story with the #Metoo on twitter, and the people who commit the assaults are getting the punishments they deserve in the Justice System.

This video is an interview of a father of a Parkland Victim. His son died in the shooting. In the interview he stated, "Help me with my cause so I can be the last dad that ever had to bury a kid killed in a school." This was super powerful and it set the tone for how serious this issue is and how we need to address it soon before this happens again. His main point was that the gun control policy does need to be addressed, but the parents need to be more involved in the kids life and know the warning sings.

Should the Government play a small or major role in economic decisions?

After researching into this topic, I believe that the Government should play a major role in economic decisions, but only to maintain economic stability. The Government has known to have ar least four main powerful roles in economic affairs. These include: Direct Services, regulation and control, stabilization and growth and direct assistance. The Government having power within the economy helps to stabilize the economy and make continue to make sure the workplace has fair and safe working conditions. During the Great Depression, the US was in the worst economic shape ever. People lost everything and spent the whole rest of their lives trying to trust the banks again and continue to live off of little to nothing. Herbert Hoover was the President before this time period hit, and his approach to the situation was just to sit back and let the problem fix itself. FDR did not agree with this line of thinking and came into office with the brilliant "New Deal". But what if Presidents continued to deal with economic problems with a hands off approach? How would our economy look today?

How 9/11 Shaped America forever

9/11. A day in America's history that will truly never be forgotten. Close to 3,000 people lost their lives that day because of the terrorists who crashed planes into the World Trade Center in New York City. It was a beautiful fall day, and at 8:45 am, so many peoples world changed. The events that followed 9/11 are important in understanding American Identity. Since this attack, people have been skeptical when they go on airplanes and when they see certain groups of people. After 9/11 people have said that it was the event that made American Citizens come together and all feel like one Country. George Bush was the president during this time and the night of 9/11 he gave a very important speech. This speech outlined what America was going to do after this point and he gave hope to families who had been torn apart. Bush modeled how a President needs to handle a time of tragedy and the characteristics that are necessary

I watched this video and was shocked by the statement, "By the end of the war, US soldiers will have dropped more than 70 million bombs on the Indochina area". The Vietnam War is an important war in American history because it was the war where the US people started to not trust the Government. New weapons and technology were introduced which resulted in way more casualties. Napalm was a substance that American soldiers used a lot. They would spray it all over and put out napalm bombs, which led to the death of many Vietnamese Civilians. American civilians started questioning if this War was necessary and the morals of the Government.

Hidden Figures is a movie about three African American woman who are mathematicians. The time period that this movie was based on was during the Civil Rights Movement. African Americans were strongly discriminated against and were segregated against. They had separate schools, water fountains, bathrooms, etc. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson were the names of the three woman who worked for NASA and helped to get John Glenn into orbit in space. Hidden Figures is a must-watch movie for everyone because it recalls how hard times were for African Americans during the Civil War and how important it was for the US to get to the moon first before Russia. This is an interview with Janelle Monáe, who plays Mary Jackson in the movie.

Immigration making up America's Identity

This is a website including many first hand accounts of their or their families journey to the US. Today, immigration laws continue to be a problem that divide our country. There are many differing opinions and strong supporters of both sides. One of the particular stories that caught my eye was Bahareh, from Chicago. She says, "I was born in Iran, and at the age of 10, my family and I absconded from the multi-systemic injustices and immigrated to the US in hopes of extended opportunities and freedom." What would this girl's life had been like if she could not immigrate to America and was forced to live in violent Iran? There are so many cases where children are forced to leave their families to immigrate here in hopes of a new life. Are we just supposed to turn our heads and act like nobody is going to try to come into our country? Or should we support the immigrants coming into the Country who are just trying to achieve the American Dream? I believe that Immigration is a big part in what makes up America's Identity because at one point in time, everyone immigrated from a place and having so many different cultures is what makes America so diverse.

Native American Assimilation

This is a video about the
Carlisle Boarding School and the ways that Native Americans were forced to assimilate. Native Americans were forced off of their land in American territories so that the Government could then decide what they want to do with it. Many Native Americans were killed, assaulted, imprisoned and raped during this process. One of the most remembered removal of Native Americans was called the "Trail of Tears". Nearly 4,000 Cherokees lost their lives on this march from American Soldiers. Native Americans were then brought to different parts in America and forced to assimilate. Children were forced into boarding schools that focused on eliminating all Native American culture and forcing them into the American ways of life. Children had to create new Americanized names and if they mentioned their culture at any point they were to be punished. Native American discrimination in the early times of American history affect Native American lives today. They face a 27% poverty rate and the rates for unemployment are crazy. They have continued to inform people about the injustices they face and work hard to get people aware of their culture. Native American Assimilation connects to the American Identity because it is an example of the discrimination that American people have faced and persevered through to try to achieve the American dream.
